Actually we in Canada love good fights, which is why hockey is so popular and why we gravitate towards MMA sports.

We even have fighters who are stars in hockey, guys like Bob Probert, Troy Crowser, Dave Shultz, McSorely, these are guys who were paid to fight..

Hell you can even google and get a list or a video of the top 10 hockey fighters of all time, so it's no wonder we love MMA sports.

 

Soo...from your point of view...how popular is the NHL(not ice hockey, the NHL) compared to MMA let's say...in Japan ? Korea ? Australia ? China ? Russia ? England ? France ? Finland ?

Or is north america the center of the earth ?

 

Gretzky transcends the sport of hockey. Even if someone never watched a hockey game in their life.. they know the name Wayne Gretzky.

And when Joe Rogan and Dana White tout GSP as "Canada's athlete of the year" they have no idea what they are talking about.
Sportsnet (which is a second tier sports network in canada) named him their athlete of the year. It wasn't some national ****ing honor.

 

I don't know the answer to that question, but here's a different question that might help. What are the biggest MMA organizations in the world and where are the revenues coming from?

Answer these two questions and it would along way to answering your particular question. I have no idea what the PPV's for MMA are in China or Korea or England and France for example, but I suspect if there wasn't a north american market the UFC wouldn't exist if that means anything, and I certainly think it does. In Russia and Finland, the NHL might be as big as MMA. They certainly watch the NHL on TV in those countries that I know.

I suspect the answer is to those questions is that the UFC is by far the biggest MMA organization and the vast majority of it's revenues (ie upward of 70-75% of them) are derived from it's north american operations..so I would say the other countries you mentioned, while they may like to watch UFC I doubt they make a significant contribution to their bottom line. That said, they are likely making in roads into Australia and England where they've had UFC events held there. But how many?? I would feel safe in saying Montreal has held more UFC events than all the countries you've mentioned.

So if I haven't made myself clear, the point of my argument is the UFC is largely a north american sports organization and so comparing it to other North American sports organizations isn't all that ridiculous.

 

See the problem is if you don't live in Canada you don't know any of this stuff. Sportsnet's athlete of the year award means nothing..in fact I didn't even know they had an award. It's a second - third level cable channel, hell TSN is even bigger than Sportnet.

If you do that you are trying to imply that people outside N America could be interested watching NBA, MLB, NHL etc...and it's simply not the case.

On the other hand, combat sport are popular worldwide, not only confined to north america. You honestly think there is even a remote chance that people in Australia will know who is Wayne Gretzky ?

The question was is Wayne Gretzky more popular then GSP simple answer is no, Gretzky is alot more popular(with only the power of number). But if the question is who is more well known through the entire world(Like comparing english langage to chinese langage....English is more spread out but there are alot more people speaking chinese then any langage on earth) GSP is prolly the right answer.

Both the NHL and UFC are North American based sports entertainment businesses..and the vast majority of both their revenues are derived from North America..deal with it.

All Dana wanted was to grab the interest of more Canadians. UFC 124 drew the biggest attention from domestic mainstream media ever (quoted from Sportsnet.ca/mma). Even in Montreal there tons of people who don't know the UFC at all and even quite a bunch that don't even know who Georges St-Pierre is.

Anytime you hear Dana say something that shocks people there's a reasonable explanation that has something to do with PPV's and he's doing a freaking good job on this part. :good

 

I can walk around America and most would know the name of Gretzky....if I said GSP...most would ask what did he do....the fact that MMA fans, most combat sports fans know GSP...but Gretzky is still the much bigger name...simple truth.
