Which one is the more famous name in boxing history, NOT who has more accomplishments, BUT who is more popular & recognizable in the fight world?

Cool. When compared to Teofilo Stevenson in the same regard, do you think Golota also is the less famous boxer around the world? So the Cuban is more famous?

Id say Golota for three reason's he was a heavyweight and those guys always get more press, he is more recent in the public memory, and he accomplished more professionally. Papp was an incredible amateur within the Eastern Block system (whereby their amateurs were basically pros) but he accomplished very little as a pro. The biggest names on his record were totally shot when he fought them.

Golota got huge coverage against Bowe, Lennox and Tyson

Papp is not known to sports fans in the Western world, unless hardcore amateur boxing enthusiasts

Obviously Golota. I'm a bigger boxing fan than 99.9% of the population and couldn't pick Papp out on film.

I don't know what Papp looks like to be honest, I've just heard his name and know of him

Interesting. What if we make the same comparison with Teofilo Stevenson. Is Golota still the more famous one in that case?

Anyone who doesn't answer Laszlo Papp shouldn't be on this site.

I would absolutely say that Golota is better known than Papp in the United States, he had high profile pro bouts against the most famous heavies of his era, and is even known by many casuals for his infamous low punches. I'm not qualified to say anything about their level of public recognition elsewhere, but I can definitively state that Golota is the better known name in America and by far the only one who might be known by anyone who isn't a die hard boxing fan here.

As the original post said, that's not a judgement on their respective talent or accomplishments, just their relative fame.

Let's agree to disagree: Golota fought 4 times for a major belt. He made history for Poland, similar to how Papp made history for Hungary in the amateurs. Bobick had 0 world title bouts. Because Golota made waves in the pro ranks & at HW, he'll be more remembered than both Papp & Bobick. Just my opinion. Tnx for sharing your views.

Thnx for commenting; when we compare Andy Golota to Teofilo Stevenson in the same regard, do you think Golota also is the more famous boxer around the world?

Golota is famous. If you headlined a PPV with Tyson, you're gonna be famous. He's more famous than Teofilo Stevenson.
