You say flashy like there just throwing pitty pat flurrys, if thats what you think then you don't know what your looking at, when both Robinson and Hagler throw there combinatons they dig them right in, Monzon isn't as effective with he's combination punches, his effectiveness comes from his ring generalship using his height and reach, I'd favour both Robinson and Hagler to beat him.

No..you're completely wrong here...by "flashy", I'm not referring to the power of their punches..I'm referring to flashy, spectacular gifts that they may have had in their youth..in their primes...gifts like fast hands, fast feet..great reflexes..the very God given gifts that they were born with, like the gifts Roy Jones had when he was young and throughout his prime..gifts that disappear long before the ring generalship, solid fundamentals and cleverness do.
Your last sentence is your opinion...mine is that Monzon would have beaten both men.

Who did Monzon EVER fight who was as good and well rounded as Leonard??? Who? Bouttier? Bogs? An Ancient Griffith? An aging Benvenuti? Briscoe? An old Moyer, who Monzon's buddy had to stop prematurely just like the Fraser Scott fight? The protected Licata or heartless Mundine? Limited Tonna or far smaller and aging Napoles? Fernandez? The best guy he fought was Valdez who he ducked for two or three years and who turned pro as a lightweight and STILL WASNT INTIMIDATED BY HIM. Sorry but Duran fought far better competition than ANYONE Monzon fought and usually under a lot less friendly circumstances and not holding the significant size advantages that Monzon did and STILL intimidated the bigger guys.

Did Monzon ever jump two divisions to fight a legitimate great fighter and have that fighter admit he was intimidated. No. Had Monzon jumped up two divisions to fight a fighter he would have run into Bob Foster. Think Bob Foster, a legit ATG would have been scared of Monzon??? Not likely.

Like I said, Monzon didnt intimidate the guys he fought, either in the ring or out of it. Thats a fact and one thats pretty well proven. You can say "I wouldnt have wanted to face him" but that means **** all. The fact is that the guys that Monzon fought, who were by and large smaller than him, came to fight and werent overly intimidated by him(outside of possibly Mundine who quit cold against him). While Duran was psyching guys out FOUR DIVISIONS higher than his best weight when he was well past his prime and considered a spent bullet.

I stand by my ascertion that unless you weighed 110 pounds, and had tits and a slit, Monzon wasnt anywhere near the most intimidating fighter and certainly not more intimidating than Hands Of Stone.

I find it fascinating how highly regarded Monzon is when so few know anything about those opponents he fought who were in their prime. Very little footage has surfaced of him from argentina. What we are left with for the most part are his championship years which IMO are extremely underwhelming. Benvenuti was at his best at 154 and by 1970 was badly faded. Griffith likewise, the Scott and Moyer fights were against badly faded also rans in which Monzon was protected by a personal referee and those fights were stopped prematurely. Bouttier was a total media creation in France. I have almost every one of his fights. Bogs was the Danish equivalent, Bennie Briscoe was good but not nearly as good as his current press would have people believe. He was an exciting but limited club fighter, Napoles was a natural lightweight who was fighting his first and only bout at 160, Licata was ridiculously protected and Tonna was billed as a big strong brute of a middleweight, aggressive and tough yet somehow got outbrawled by the fragile Cohen and an aging Bettini (who was well past his prime at that point) not to mention quiting cold against Valdez while trying to win on a cowardly DQ. As stated above Valdez is Monzon's best opponent, a guy who turned pro at lightweight and had an up and down career who Monzon ducked for two or three years during his prime and who was coming off a badly injured right hand and the death of his brother (the week of the fight) when he fought Monzon. I just dont see it. Even against those guys Monzon wins but doesnt really look all that devastating. Hes slippery and deceptively hard to hit, has a decent power and strength but again, for the most part hes facing smaller, older fighters, or euro trash. I think the guy is overrated. He certainly wasnt facing anyone on par with opposition of someone like Greb, Robinson, or even Hagler and Hopkins.

But there is no contest in terms of who is the more skilled man.

Cue somebody taking it the wrong way blah blah I'm underrating Monzon blah blah. I believe he's an ultimate ring general and has fantastic timing. As I say though, no contest what so ever in terms of skill.

Duran was far more intimidating at lightweight, especially when defending his crown at home, with a hometown ref and local judges. :yep

So your argument boils down to:

All these guys have outstanding physical attributes that Monzon doesn't
Monzon would have found a way to win

So you're saying you'd favour Monzon to beat shot to pieces versions of these fighters like he beat shot fighters in his own time? :think

The Hopkins flashy gifts you talk about still seem to be apparent though :think

I think Monzon by far. In the same way i would fear Lewis over Tyson.
