Beterbiev is a very accurate puncher. I regard him as a "highly-educated slugger" - though he does a great job of bringing pressure to his, too. Artur's biggest problem seems to be that it takes him a few rounds to get into a groove and read his opponent. A lot of people seem to be convinced he's chinny - but I think he's just susceptible to getting caught off balance in those early rounds. He was eating quite a lot of stuff from Gvozdyk early in their fight. Historically, that is not something you want do do - but Artur was able to weather it and he just chopped up Gvozdyk thereafter. Beterbiev's body punching is just about as good as it gets. He started landing big shots to the body on Gvozdyk in Round 5 and that robbed Gvozdyk of all his energy and power... GGG and Beterbiev are sort of similar in that regard. Both throw combos with a heavy first shot to the body to move the opponent's hands down and then they go upstairs. Great stuff. I suspect GGG circa 2012-2015 was a bit heavier hitter at MW than Artur is currently as a LHW...but it's pretty close. It has been a privilege to watch both fighters in their primes.
You had a great observation in there. It doesn't really seem like Artur sits down into his punches most of the time - but they nevertheless carry huge power. And you are right that it is a very rare thing. He can seem curiously off balance in the first few rounds of a fight, though. In the past I attirbuted that to his not fighting all that frequently...but maybe it's just a bit of nerves? He does seem to be a quiet/thoughtful man when interviewed (which isn't often)
I agree that GGG is better at all those things that you named....that was a great list you put together. But I'm really amazed at how accurate a puncher Beterbiev is when he's throwing his heaviest stuff. He's the "Anti-Wilder" if you will...
That’s the kind of fight I want to see ginger in again, I want to see him overcome serious adversity. Like an atg could…and should.
GGG and it's not close. Beterbiev is a well schooled boxer, but his edge is his power. GGG has (or had) murderous power as well.
GGG has much better all around skills both offensively and defensively. Beterbiev though is not without. He is very adept at sizing up an opponent and then breaking him down, in a persistent and painful manner. GGG can fight coming forward or box off the backfoot.
What? Mayweather schooled him. Lara and Trout beat him too. Maybe you're talking about a prime version of Canelo?
GGG more skillful. Beterbiev is more of a murderous puncher, he doesn't pick his punches with as much technique as prime GGG or accuracy, but he can unleash huge torque in short distances. Once the distance is closed you need to be very tactful to get out of it.
Better boxer Golovkin, better fighter Beterbiev. More size, more weight, more power vs more skill... Beterbiev wins. A good chance 2012 to 2016 Golovkin might have been able to overcome the physical difference with his skill, but nowadays not so much.
Regardless of the skill difference, Beterbiev is one of the most dangerous mid-range fighters in history. The amount of power he generates from his short punches are extraordinary.
Abel Sanchez said ggg and beterbiev are physically absolute specimens and are incredible strong. He also said that it would be a hell of a fight ggg vs beterbiev
