Who's more technical: Willy Pep or Ricardo Lopez?

Finito Lopez Easily one of the most underrated boxers in history.

 

Granted I’m a dinosaur, MJ, but more than anything else, I’m a boxing fan and hope I’ve established impartial creds on ESB.

I’ve trained with Willie – seen lots of his fight live, and also watched Lopez. He’s in the mold of all the Bersitain boxers: hands high, drilled to perfection, a textbook example of what’s right to do, and carried heavy lumber in both hands – a predator looking for the KO.

Willie was all reflexes, with trigger-quick hands and feet, radar for incoming, and not a muscle in his body. It was all God-given. He only came to the gym when he couldn’t get to the track.

Lopez, hands down, was the better technician. Willie was an improvisational artist – a wonder to behold.

 

Thanks for sharing your experience with Pep. "Only came to the gym when he couldn't get to the track." What a great quote. So Pep didn't train much? Was he out of shape much? Also, any other old fighters that you saw impress you?

 

The only shape Willie knew, st, was "outta shape." If they coulda set up a ring in a gin mill, he'd a been there religiously. His only health regime was a steady diet of J&B.

 

The term "technical " should refer to standard, textbook boxing technique. Given the choice between Pep and Lopez as to who is the most "technical," the correct answer has to be Lopez.

usually when people say he is not fast it means they think that the fighter is slow or sluggish. same with a person who isnt a big puncher doesnt mean he cant punch.

Lopez was the better technician; especially in terms of offense. Every punch that he threw was short, compact, and could set up a follow-up punch if so desired. Pep was faster, and, ultimately greater, but Lopez possessed better technique...as he did over most any other fighter who has ever set foot into the ring.

Lopez was the 105 version of JMM, with better movement, and, if possible, even more precise, textbook punching.
