I can understand why people think he is overrated.... he hasn't done much noteworthy work since his loss to Hopkins...... but i think people have short memories and forget he is still a devastating puncher at MW with good workrate and a killer instinct. He can take a punch. 2009 was essentially a lost year for him...... I'm willing to see what 2010 brings.
Now Boo, don't be a boxing snob. Not everyone knows all the ins and outs. Hell, I know I don't. onedream seems a cool dude and, although I don't know about prior interactions you might have had with him, he seems pretty tame in his criticisms of KP.
I'm very disappointed about the Pavlik/Williams situation. PW was so over rated before the Martinez fight that beating him would have put KP right back on top. I never thought Williams could last 5 rounds with Pavlik. Now, I wouldn't be surprised if he was done in 3. I don't think it was coincidence that the first time Paul faced a world class guy above 147 he got battered around. Martinez is not a puncher AT ALL, but he rocked Williams many times. Stylistically Martinez is a much more difficult opponent, but he is not difficult enough to Keep Pavlik off of him for 12 rounds. Pavlik would do what Cintron failed to do. He'd stay right on Sergio's ass, force him to keep his hands up, force him to fight at a pace he can't cope with, and knock him out.
So.... looks like Sturm is out. Williams is heading back to 147 for some reason......... Martinez is the odds on at this point? ANyone else in the picture?
I think it will be Martinez. Pavlik did say he wanted the winner of Williams/Martinez, and said he had Martinez up by a couple rounds. Now Williams and his people are not intersted. All parties seem to want to make it happen. If you don't count the fight PW pulled out of in 2008, Martinez was actually in the running before Williams was. HBO gave KP a list of 4 pre-approved fighters last summer, and Sergio was one of them. Kelly trashed the list and called out Williams, but Martinez was on the list at Dibella's request. If KP has to take another chump change fight, I'm pulling for David Lopez. Good southpaw, 6' 2", hasn't lost since Zuniga stopped him in the 12th in 2005. Ranked #7 by Ring Magazine, and you simply can't find a more deserving guy.
How about Angulo that would be a great fight especially if Pavlik decides to brawl him like he did with Espino, that has fireworks all over it. Angulo is ranked for both sanctions of Pavlik's belt im sure they would allow it.
I might have been drunk, dreaming or both...... but did I possibly hear something about Kermit Cintron? Could that be right?
Brawling with Angulo like he did with Espino would be pure stupid. Guys like Espino and Rubio can't hurt Pavlik, and very little of what they throw lands 100% flush. I think Angulo is a cat of another color. I doubt if we'd see that patented Pavlik grin much of the time:nono
The only person who talked about Cintron was Cintron. I do not remember exactly what he said, but it was something like, "If can't find an opponent, Ill fight him." There wasn't much to it.
Ah, I see. I'd still rather see him or Angulo than a guy like Lopez. But, admittedly, I know very little of him.
David Lopez was very poorly managed early in his career. He fought everywhere from welterweight to cruiserweight, and often took fights on very short notice. The up side is that he has recovered from the bull****, and put together 14 straight wins. Among them are Mendoza who gave Lacy all he could stand, He took Micheal Walker's zero before Walker gave Danny Jacobs all he could handle, he stopped Billy Lyell who went on to take Duddy's zero, 28-1 Rocky Montoya quit on his stool after 6 rounds and never fought again. Most recently he beat a good gate keeper in Ossie Duran. Lopez has also held a **** load of minor titles from 160-175. If the version of Sturm that showed up to fight Gevor climbed in the ring with David Lopez, "The Destroyer" would end the night as WBA middleweight champ.
