Basic records dont always tell you the full story... A mans career record may be full of decent names on paper, but the names may be a year or two out of that fighters prime... Frank Bruno boxed for example against a lot of ex champs and challengers through his long career, but in actual fact his wins over many of them were three , to five years after they stopped being a threat to the division.. He beat James Tillis, Gerrie Coetzee and Carl Williams , all great in thier primes, but all faced Frank when they were all but retired and done..

A Gym rat will know more about who is in top shape at a particular time, almost daily.. I have seen more unbeleivable facts occurr in gyms that have changed my outlook on many fighters.... I have seen Ruslin Chagaev knocked out in front of my very eyes, I have seen young kids run Samuel Peter out of the ring even when he was champ....

I see almost daily how young up and coming fighters suddenly become fearless and look untouchable, those kind of guys talent cant be understood by the records they hold.. Eli McCall is one in question and so is Mike Hunter Jr.. Two very good future champs, who on paper dont look like they are up to much.. But are quietly going about thier business escalating slowly towards the top... I have to take the gym rat any day.........

Most gym rats have a better understanding of the sport and all the factors invovled in a fighters preparation for a fight.
Its like comparing Max Kellerman to Emanuel Steward. Who is going to have a more credible opinion?

:good:good:good^^^ you are so right on spot on post!! I have a zillion stories about this. I witnesed Prospect King IPitan (big prospect at the time) drop Riddick bowe and he was messed up:nut they stopped the session and this was right before his rematch with Holyfied( LA BOXING GYM SAME LOT AS OLYMPIC)

Use to watch Zack padilla,Genaro Hernandez,Shane Mosley go at it all elite fighters , But one thing i wil tell you is they all went even steven very brutal sparring sessions.

Saw Carlos Navarro but an ass whuppin on then champ Manuel Medina.
Carlos was a great gym fighter but burnt out as a pro he actually has a win over Mayweather in the amatuers, but ended up a fringe contender journeyman type as a pro.:-(

Either side can know their stuff but it takes experience on both sides to be the most well rounded boxing expert.

I by nature am the nerdy knowledge sponge type who will research facts an statistics and background stories. Having gotten involved in learning to box over the past few years to get in shape has helped me immensely with understanding how things actually work in the ring and the best strategies to employ. I can read fighters better as to what's going on in their heads during a fight in conjuction to what's transpiring in the ring.

Theres lies so much beneath the surface on both sides that you need both to have the best objective opinion. Those who fall more to the extremes compliment the other extremes.

Yes sir.. thanks for the agree.....

I remember the incident with Ipiatan Aktobar... he was a great prospect at the time and many denied the Bowe sessions.... It wasn't the only time Ipiatan caused the blues for fighters... It was Mike Marley who came to me and told me a week after it happened.. Mike was his manager at the time.. One similar incident was Ipian hurt Mike Bentt just prior to the Hide fight.. the press closed the gym for the workout and someone threw the light switch to stop cameras catching any photos of the knockdown..

You know what , i hate seein how his career ended up going.. with that ko loss to Bobby Crabtree in Mexico.. God bless,

how does the saying go? " Those who can't, teach"

Just because you are good at something doesnt mean you know everything about it or can pass on knowledge so well.

    Either or mate.
Boxrec addicts.....? You mean people that have got into boxing since the dawn of the internet and know people's careers inside out without watching the actual footage?? Do people like that really exist?

Gym rats don't necessarily know all there is to know by default either. A guy i used to box with over 15 years ago still trains now; so he's been doing it for most of his adult life and yet when you talk boxing with him he still thinks the sport begins and ends with the likes of Pacquiao, Mayweather, David Haye etc. (Of course, there's plenty of people on the internet who feel the same...........)

I think both are credible and know boxing.

Kellerman is a student of the game and a boxing fan. He enjoys watching boxing and likely has seen more matchups on videotape than Emmanuel Steward ever did.

Thats the thing about boxing trainers and boxers as analyst. They may be a little bias toward a particular style that they preffered or teached that may bias them in their analysis where Kellerman may not stray to far out and let his biases influence his analysis.
I take the opinions both offer in a broadcast and let my 30+ years of paying attentiion to the sport decide who's better analyzing the happenings, and let me tell you, it has'nt always been Emmanuel Steward with the better takes of the happenings.
