Apparently the headgears come off after the Olympics.

This is gonna be great. Less punches you don't see coming, more opportunities to cut dudes up. I predict we see improved jabs worldwide now that we can do damage with them. And chicks dig scars :!:

Also, ten point must system is gonna be good for those of us who don't like to throw 200 punches a round or fight guys who use a shell defense.

This can only cause an increase in quality pro boxing. Nice step in the right direction for boxing.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/boxing/14446438 my understanding from reading that article was that a seperate branch of amatuer boxing will exist with the no headgear, so amatuers can have an easier transition to the pro ranks

Yeah it sounds like all levels 17 and up will go non-headgear, and that semipro organization will also exist for boxers to get paid. Not 100% clear, but I think it'll be like a permanent WSB or something. Like taking the best boxers and having them compete year round with pay. Kinda weird though, that's essentially full-time pro boxing. The real semi-pros will be the 99% of pro boxers who have to keep a day job. Almost like the top amateurs ducking the pros.

My coach told me that it might be optional after the Olympics, but he didn't have much more info

It's not optional, it's a new rule for all. Affects all boxers in all countries that fight under AIBA rules.

Got a link? Is this definitely coming into effect after the Olympics? Would mean my next bout is without headgear :)

As long as you're not female or a junior then no head guard for you. I'm not sure about novice boxers but 10 fights (elite) or more and you'll be fighting no head guard, 10 point must scoring.

It'll take years to train up all the officials & bring out rules to make it work, I like the idea but it feels like it's being rushed through.

Ie. How would the national competitions work, where you have to box more than twice a week & you receive cuts?

Who'll be paying these semi-pro boxers, a club, manager, ticket sales AIBA

It all feels stupid I don't mind the no head guards & 10 point must but all the semi pro & introducing more rounds is gonna totally change the sport

The extra rounds are for the professional division, olympic boxing will still be 3x3 at this point
