These two fighters have received more gift decisions more than any other fighter that I can think of. My question to the forum is which of the two has received more? Personally, I think Ali received gifts in both Norton rematches, Jimmy Young, Doug Jones and the second Frazier fight which probably could have gone either way. Delahoya got gifts against Whitaker, Felix Sturm, and Quartey, IMO.

IMO Ali. He won some fights purely on his name.

Ali probably got more undeserved decisions. The only robbery that De La Hoya got the verdict was against Sturm. I thought he won against Quartey (slim) and Whitaker (slim). Neither of those were robberies.

I think that Ali beat Norton the second time around. Lost the third fight.
I think that he beat Jimmy Young. You can't expect to win the heavyweight championship the way that Young was fighting.
I think he won the Jones fight 6-4.
I think he beat Frazier in the second fight.

So, I would have to say that in my humble opinion, Ali recieved one gift fight, at the end of his career, to Norton.

I also think that De La Hoya was beat by Strum, and I will be honest and say that I have not seen the other two De La Hoya fights as of yet.

so 1 and 1 for me based on what I have seen of De La Hoya.

I may be in the minority here, but I really have no idea how people scored the Shavers fight for Ali. I had it 9-6 Shavers and I thought I was being a tad generous to Ali. Ali was throwing these bull**** flurries that sometimes got thru, sometimes caught gloves, and Shavers was hitting Ali with clean shots.

Admittedly, I haven't seen the Norton and Young fights in a long time and don't remember what I scored them. I didn't see the controversy against Jones. Clay/Ali won that 6-3-1.

Oscar got a gift against Sturm. The Whitaker fight was very close and a scorer's nightmare. I had it even. No gift there. I think it's a stretch to call the Quartey fight a gift as well, but you have to be real generous to give that one to Oscar. The rounds were not difficult to score. After 5, you can have it 3-2 either way, or 2-2-1. Be generous to DLH and it's 3-2 Oscar. Round 6 was a clear Quartey round when both guys went down....Ike controlled the round after the KDs. Oscar did **** all in rounds 7 through 9. Oscar has to win the last 3 rounds to get the nod on my card. I gave him 2 of the last 3. 114-113 Quartey.

Ridiculous thread, it seems to be that some people (incl. the thread creator) don´t know what the definition of the word "robbery" is, a robbery is when a fighter clearly wins a fight, and the other fighter gets the decision or so, DLH´s only robbery was against Sturm, the other fights (Quartey, Trinidad, Whitaker) were very close and could have gone either way. If you want to see a real robbery, than watch for example the 3rd Norton- Ali fight...

I would just like to state a FACT about this topic , Ali never fought a fight which had anywhere near a close decision to make while in his prime . De La Hoya , it can be argued was gifted at least two in his prime .

They've both had plenty of "controversial" decisions.

Ali -> Jones  , Young, Norton 3, Shavers.

IMO Ali won them all except Norton.

    DLH -> Quartey, Whitaker, Sturm.

I think DLH won them all except Sturm... however, the worst decision of his career was against Tito, thus it's even for him.

People can never call them "close fights", they have to be "gift decisions".

Tito-DLH was a far bigger robbery than Norton-Ali.

It could be a tie. I thought Ali was lucky to receive the duke against Norton (3) and Young. Oscar lucky vs Sturm (fix) and Whitaker and 'maybe' Quartey. So De La Hoya would edge it, but I thought he was shafted vs Mosely and Trinidad (terrible decision, bordering on a fix too). Ali wasn't jobbed out of any verdicts, so while Oscar perhaps received more gifts, he was hard done by a lot more.

They both profited from a few decisions which were debatable. I think De La Hoya's "win" over Sturm was probably the worst decision victory between the two, but I note that it is also true that De La Hoya has lost some close/questionable decisions, too; I scored the Mosley rematch pretty clearly for De La Hoya, personally.

While both Ali and De La Hoya likely won a match or two due to their name, Ali was never ROBBED, and De La Hoya was.

So I would say Ali got more gift descions, and his won over Norton in the 3rd fight trumps any gift De La Hoya was given.

Ali's final ring record was 56-5. If the judges were fair I think its more like 54-7.
