Who's the best counterpuncher Calzaghe has ever fought?

Calzaghe himself claims to be a "classic counterpuncher." He tends to perform better when being attacked. His defense tends to be rather leaky when he goes on the attack. Rid may or may not have been the best counterpuncher Calzaghe has faced, but like all the others Reid was simply outclassed.

 

Yep, definitely Reid.

 

For "not a good counterpuncher", Kessler's best moments in the fight were when he was counterpunching!

He hit Calzaghe with GREAT counter 1-2s, which is pretty difficult to do against a southpaw in the first place. He also tagged Calzaghe with some really beautiful counter right uppercuts!

Also not only was he counter punching at some really funny angles, as Calzaghe DOES leave himself open but he does it while throwing strange punches on top of him being a southpaw with makes countering his punches harder because you're less use to seeing them coming from the places they're coming from. But also he did it at some odd ranges. He threw straight counter punches with little room is very hard to do, but Kessler did a tremendous job of making room for his punches and finding the specific range he needed to be able to set a few traps with Calzaghe and make him put himself in positions where he could get hit coming in, or countered, or whatever. OF course its possible Calzaghe just was getting countered straight up, but I'll give Kessler more credit I think.

Reid would have been less effective against a two handed Calzaghe. He was landing rights, but they weren't counter punches, he was the aggressor.

 

calzaghe was due to fight thomas tate and thomas tate pulled out with less than 2 weeks to go and pudwell who had gone 12 v ottke in a title fight recently was brought in as the sacraficial lamb late replacement.

 

Eubank was a counter puncher...

Eubank was great great counterpuncher but weight drained. Bika countered Joe clean allot but Joe probably wasnt well prepared for Bika

 

Robin Reid a very talented fighter(when he felt like it) in his prime

and as far as the agenda of this thread goes the version that JC fought is better than the current 43 year old Hopkins running scared of Master Joe

 

I agree totally mate:good However I think this was somewhat of a change in Kesslers normal routine..It seemed that he was waiting too much..Thinking back on it...Kessler usually fights the type of fight Joe did..And thats what won Joe the fight..the fact that he was willing to sacrifice himself to be the more active and dominant fighter..Kessler was stunned by the crowd and Joes workrate..you could see it in his eyes:admin

 

on a side note.

hard to be a good counterpuncher v calzaghe .

he gives you angles and foot movement and just keeps punching.

it would be more a case of potshotting through the calzaghe flurries.

i remember manfredo saying" he was just biding his time on the ropes , covering up from calzaghe`s pitter pat punch`s waiting to throw something back when calzaghe stopped punching , but he never did stop punching."
