One of the better recent heavyweight examples of a man completely lacking in natural physical gifts who got by on will over skill (Yes I know he played sports or something) Hipp was made of absolute iron.

Southpaw, 220 some odd pounds in shape, tough as a old boot, a little bit of power, good work rate... How would he have fared if he had come around a decade or so earlier in the early 1980's? Would his work ethic pay dividends against the fighters of the lost generation who were known to be lazy? Or does he come up short like he did in his own era?

Good chance he pulls a Willard a outlasts old Johnson if we're giving him the benefit of that rule set!

Who did Hipp really beat to make himself a contender? I think the best guy on his resume is Alex Garcia. He gave Morrison a hell of a fight. I don't know if I really give him much of a chance against too many top guys. His face tended to swell like a balloon! He was a tough courageous guy though

Oh I wasn't trying to imply he was a contender! Just curious who a limited but tough and game guy like Hipp would match up well against with his set of skills.

He did swell terribly, as badly as I've ever seen a fighter swell now that I think about it. Almost every other fight had him looking like Foreman in the Stewart bout! He had the misfortune of breaking his jaw in one of his first bouts as well.

I think he would give Anthony Joshua a tough night.

I think he would have had a decent chance of beating Shannon Briggs. Briggs got beaten by lesser fighters in his prime

I think that he could've beaten Bruce Seldon had he fought in his typical bruising style. He also was able to knock out Jose Ribalta, and I had him outpointing Morrison and Cooper ahead of each stoppage (the one with Bert was kinda sketchy from what I remember).

Most fighters with lacking chins have hard times against Hipp, I think. Good workrate, decent handspeed, and nice power. Maybe he could've KO'd/decisioned some guys from the 60s scene? Thad Spencer, late Ernie Terrell, Karl Mildenburger?

Among some of Larry Holmes' title challengers: Evangelista, Zanon, Scott Frank, Ledoux, LeRoy Jones, maybe Leon Spinks...there's probably at least one W in there for Hipp
