Galento sucks balls and has terrible form on film, but apparently some people think highly of him. So who's the best heavyweight he beats in the modern era?

No one should think highly of him like he’s a “great” no one should also think that highly of David Tua either… they’re both very good pros, nothing overly special but Galento fought more often, started at 18 as a pro and worked it out as he went fighting very frequently, he fought 111 times as a PRO and was mostly successful, a good contender he can’t have been the unthinking slob we pretend he is.

The obsession with him is weird. He wasn't very good in his own era - he won a big fight against Nathan Mann and then was in that stinker with Harry Thomas, then he soft-pedalled his way to a big money fight with Joe Louis based upon his colourful nature and the fondness for him in the media (which happens all the time). Everyone else he was meant to lose to, he lost to, pretty much.

Look at his record. It tells the tale, he was no better than that.

Tua was much, much better though.

For example I could instantly think of dozens of modern ranked heavyweights that Tua could beat but I'm scratching my head for Galento and it sure isn't Moorer, Rahman or John Ruiz.

    Maybe David Price? Mahmoudov?

Oh Tua is H2H better than Galento, I don’t think Galento is good enough to be boxing today he’s a small albeit heavy guy… he could compete in the 60s? Maybe do okay in the 70s… I just think he was on the same shelf of as a Tua just a very good / good contender he was a slob looking fella and he probably ate a lot of hot dogs but a thinking fighter not a boar, a guy who actually understood what he was doing even if it didn’t look pretty. I hope you’re not mistaking me with someone who thinks Tony would do any better then say a Bonavena type… or a Chuvalo etc.

Don't put Tua and Galento in the same league. Please. Just look at the film. It's not even close.

Galento would F you up in a boxing ring sir and you’re a modern jacked athlete… so that says something it says boxing experience is important and at some point the proof of 111 fights means something beyond how it looks… Galento would be a contender up to the 60s maybe fhe 70s before size got out of control IMO.

I feel like half the lumberjacks and farmers at my nearest bar (13 miles away) would wipe the floor with him.

    And I feel right.

Some believe had he had access to today's physical training and sports science, he'd have been able to reach his true genetic potential.
