Footwork, blocking/slipping skills, jabs, accuracy, ring generalship, overall technique, etc. Who's the best ever, the most skilled boxer to ever step in the ring? Both offensive & defensive skills. not natural atheltic talent. I know the athleticism of Muhammad Ali or Roy Jones made both great at hitting & not getting hit, and I know both did have skills, but that's not what I'm asking. If there was someone I forgot that you feel deserves to be a choice, let me know.
3-way tie ... Willie Pep, Floyd Mayweather, and Sugar Ray Robinson ... 3 fighters that had savvy, was hard to hit, and had good jabs when using them, Pep more so than the other two.
Pernell Whitaker, hands down. Pep is a primitive example. And don't you guys even say SRR, he was not known for being a defensively savvy pure boxer, he was nothing of the sort stylistically, watch film and actually read about him before posting. Then you lot exlude Whitaker but place in Floyd first thought, with certainly the greatest of all time in Robinson, but who was not a 'pure boxer' or a defensively savvy fighter like a pure boxer is expected to be.:rofl Ray was offensive minded first.
I don't even know what to say here, Duran was defensively savvy and made you miss, but a 'pure boxer' stylist? He could fight from this standpoint if needed, but it was not his bread and butter style. What is going on here? The thread asks 'who is the best 'pure boxer' ever? And Robinson, Duran get named, but not Pernell Whitaker, Benitez, Locche, Leonard, when the former two are not even 'pure boxers', but rather extremely recognisable top 10 ATG's? :think
It almost just don't seem right seing Floyd's name next to those...:!: [Kinda in terms of "Boxing" borderline Blasphemy] Great choice with Duran aswell, he would be #2 for me.
I made this thread with a poll, forgot it on this one. Go to that one and choose. By the way, Duran's the most complete fighter I've ever seen, but not one of the fighters in discussion for best pure boxer.
SRL doesn't compare ... he was very hittable and it shown throughout his career. Leonard was just fast w/ fast hands ... he wasn't great at blocking and slipping ... he would often exchange and leave himself open.
