I trained David Burke to Commonwealth and WBU titles when nobody else would touch him, Gary Davies since he was 12 years old (including amateur titles along with Martin Murray & Ste Birch) I have also helped out with Peter Culshaw in his last few, Johnny Armour, Gary Lockett, Gary Thonhill, I've also trained many good boxers who did'nt win titles and some that hav'nt won any yet and I've had a few foreign boxers who are world class come here to be trained by me. And there's a couple more in the gym now and we are looking for any prospects without work as our promotors licence is on it's way
I have respect for my mate Joe, he goes about his way meticulously, he's trained the Murray's from kids but lets see him train an average fighter to a good level
Much respect Shaymus, great list of fighters there... Since i've turned my hand to training fighters I've realised there is no such thing as a best trainer par se, there are trainers who are more suitable then others to an individual but ultimately you can either do the job or you can't. In this age of championship class amateurs fighting journeyman 90% of the time there really is far less of a challenge presented for trainers then there was say back in the 60-70's and even 80's when the best fighters tackled each other on the way up. I remember when I first saw a thread like this and I quickly reeled of a load of names thinking I knew what I was talking about, but as the thread progressed I realised i'd left loads of 'top' trainers out. Looking back I realise its impossible to have a best trainer- the role encompasses to many things. The truth is that a slight knowledge of boxing and fitness is sufficient to get a championship class amateur boxer to beat a journeyman. They've had the fundamentals of boxing drilled into their head for so many years its second nature. The acid test comes in 50-50 fights or when your lads the underdog, but then often its down to the fighter and what they have got inside them to. We all saw 'trainer of the year' Enzo's approach to the Macca-Haye fights and the Pavlik-Locket matches. Buddy Mcgirt is another who gets loads of stick having in the past been praised for his work with Gatti. What you will find is that given the right fighter a trainer will prosper but 90% of the time its the fighter that makes the trainer not the other way round- especially i this sport where boxers leave their amateur clubs to turn pro.
Jeff, you said everything I missed out and you know exactly what I mean, don't you have something to do with Shotten ABC ?
Never heard of Shotten ABC Shaymus- what makes you think that?... I'm a personal trainer, but I coach some kids and adults as well as assist Kevin Maree and other trainers when possible. I'm serving my apprenticeship at the moment but having been trained poorly myself I've realised how terrible some people who profess to be boxing trainers are. That said there are many very, very knowledgable people in boxing and I always find that they are the ones who are quick to help me and/or offer assistance. That said boxing is massively backward with regards to training theories and practices. I was never tutored into the 'hows' and 'whys' and its only now as a trainer that I actually understand what I was meant to be doing and why I was meant to be doing it.
I remember a guy called Jeff Thomas (I think) used to box for them near Chester and he turned pro late on, ended up coaching there, proberbly go the name wrong, I'm **** with names. Anyway if you ever need sparring for the lads in your gym we are in Liverpool centre.
your not a trainer you sound like a someones number 2 or 3 an ive asked about you an no one as heard of you , sorry that was for shaymas
Shaymus you said Arnie's only been a trainer for 5 minutes well its almost 6 years now but i take your point that statement is a complement in its self having built up the best stable of prospects in the country in such a short time bears testament to his coaching ability. With all your vast experience i persume you currently must have a similar stable of prospects like Arnie has As a matter of interest how many top prospects do you currently train
shaymus, did the culshaw who you trained have any brothers ?? my mate got KO'd in the ABA's in liverpool back in the 80's by a fighter named culshaw, who could bang a bit ??
