I'm always interested in talking about these two guys. Both very obsecure heavyweight fighters of the 80's with some opposite and similar traits to each other. Cummings is a very big musclebound fighter with an imposing physique while Sims on the other is a smallish heavyweight with a much skinnier and lankier frame but is somewhat stronger than he looks. Both could punch and both could take a punch. The difference is that Cummings has the more genuine chin but Sims has the more genuine punch. Both have fought and compete against some pretty good fighters (Cummings: Frazier, Snipes, Witherspoon, Green & Bruno/Sims: Young, Shavers, Biggs, Ribalta, Jackson & Berbick). Both have losing streaks at the end their career. Both have pretty similar styles (a standup toe to toe puncher) and both of them fought each other (Sims won by KO8). By looking at their respective records: Floyd Cummings: 15-6-1 (13 KO's) Jeff Sims: 22-9-0 (20 KO's) Who do you think is the better fighter? Who had the better record? Your thoughts about them? And if you have the footage of their fight, is it an entertaining bout? It's an eight round knockout loss. I can't imagine seeing this fight as a war (becuz of their stylistic matchup). Here are some footage of them: Jeff Sims: This content is protected Floyd Cummings: This content is protected
I don’t have much to say though I’ve read that Cummings was trained by Curtis Shepard and it’s possibly a look into the Hachetmans style? We of course know Curtis has no film available with the exception of private collections and museum archives so that could be an excuse to watch him for me anyway lol. Another thing his fight with Frazier to me points to Joes chin being a lot more sturdy then most credit him with, when you consider how powerful “Jumbo” was meant to be anyway.
I went with Simms slightly. Both were tough men. Simms was a brutal hitter though. Stopped 20 of his 22 victims. Broke Tyrell Biggs collar bone. Split Muhammad Ali’s lip in sparring. Knew a guy in Florida many years ago who lived near Belglade Florida in the center of the state where Simms was living at the time. Simms apparently got into a fight at a bar and it took multiple cops to get him into the squad car…. Both Simms and Cummings did a lot of time in jail. Simms died a number of years ago and last I heard Cummings was still incarcerated.
Have you seen Sims knockout over Cummings? I would have to say it's scary as hell. It was the greatest accomplishment of Sims career and a great deal at showing off his power. I heard he also dislocated Trevor Berbick's shoulder with one punch, sounds pretty interesting ngl.
Sims was one of the many great punching men who never learned how to do much more than slam. It sucks that we lost a lot of potentially great men because they didn't get proper training and just tried to prosper off of their huge power. I definitely think that Sims was better, as while Cummings lost to nigh every man with a decent name (Even Laughing Larry and an ancient Joe Frazier didn't lose to him), Jeff holds many accolades for his insane feats of strength in and out of the ring. If you wanna build an argument off of wins, neither men has any notable wins over Sims' own win over Cummings, and both fighters would have likely lost to any of the men that the other one did, with the exception of Jeff maybe being able to beat Bruno, and Cummings maybe being able to beat an old Jimmy Young- Though I wouldn't bet on anything.
