Who's the furthest back, classic Fighter, Who could have beaten Riddick Bowe?

I too agree that Joe Louis would be about as far back as you could go.

You're not crazy. There are several elite cruiserweights (essentially what Dempsey would be if transplanted into modern times) I'd give a decent shot at defeating Bowe.

 

not crazy at all, bowe was big and had good skills, he could also be hit and dempsey was fast and hit hard. how hard? who knows.

bowe obviously wins imo, 7 inches taller and a much better boxer. play that out, it only goes 1 way.

 

Bowe was 6'5", Dermpsey was 6'1". That's 4 inches not 7.

I'd favor Bowe, but Dempsey absolutely "could" win. Bowe's defense was non-existent, and he had a tendency to loop the right hand, both of which invites ample opportunities for a swarmer.

 

Bowe was neither seven inches taller nor a much better boxer.

Riddick Bowe was a gigantic smashing machine who nearly murdered guys who would spark half of these old timers mentioned from existence.

Bowe vs. Dempsey could look like Bowe vs. Hide. Hide was a murderer around 200 lbs and a notorious gym bully, probably one of the worst ever I heard (I know Canelo killed a guy and Mayorga would beat up local dudes for sparring). Hide was a menace and a fair analog for the power and physical package a lot of these undersized old timers would bring to the table in their form. Bowe nearly killed him and had him falling all over the ring from any errant touch.

to answer the question...The dudes who could beat Bowe have to be considered along the lines of the people that actually gave him trouble: tough guys who could bang with him and make him relent. For me Shavers isn't durable enough, but could find that Holmes overhand. Who knows. Dempsey is a cruder pick than Shavers to me, as you take away the main element of legendary spark-out power which makes it interesting.

George Foreman is where I would draw the line and Bowe could win that, too. I think Ali would have been interesting and Bowe would have fit into the 1970s as another great entrant if not a recurring champion. I don't hate Frazier either because he brings a lot of Holyfield like aspects to how he would approach Bowe. But imagine those uppercuts and inside hooks Bowe learned for Holyfield I ripping against a less durable, smaller, and less physical fighter who would be bobbing right into the shots. All bad for Smokin' Joe, but he would have the heart to finish that fight and maybe outwork Bowe in a slugfest.

Ron Lyle would be interesting, obviously I'd love to see Bowe fight other historical big guys like Carnera and Willard just for the sake of fun. Bowe vs. Wilder/AJ/Fury/Usyk would be awesome. If he were around today I can't imagine Bowe not being champ.
