Who's the GOAT at SMW?

Has anyone recently watched Benn-Malinga I and scored it objectively?

"Legend" had it for years that Malinga was robbed against both Benn and Eubank, but how much of that was accurate is debatable.

I revisited Eubank-Malinga a few months back and was slightly surprised that I had Eubank winning a close but deserved decision. There's no way I'm sitting through another Sugarboy Malinga fight though any time soon though.

 

Anyone saying Calacrappy, Kessler, Froch etc are fuking mentally ******ed.

Good call Momus. Many who havent watched the fights just go on Boxrec see something like SD or MD etc and make out it was a robbery.
Eubank looked the winner to me against Malinga, but Malinga gave a good account of himself. Malinga often fought off the back foot and seemed negative at times.
Many comment about Ottke but I think Ottke was the winner except for the Reid fight. Maybe Larsen had a good arguement, but fighters like G Johnson seemed to be outboxed by Ottke but often because Johnson is still until recently active and gave Froch a tough fight and beat Jones, memory and judgement get clouded

 

Yes good video featuring Calzaghe, Collins, Eubank, Jones and Woodhall and how good does Calzaghe look there with a win over Eubank, Jones and Woodhall and Collins twice backing out against him, further cementing why Calzaghe is the top SMW ever

I worked that out by facing them off against one another in my head and Joe beats them all.
Collins beats Eubank
Eubank beats Jones
Jones beats Ward

Any of you think Jones is the best you need your head testing.
He was good against slow opposition but against BOXERS on elite level he'd get his ass kicked.

Can Jones even Box?
His technique is terribly.
He's a show-pony who used his agility to KO people with counter-punches.
You honest think that's going to work with a Eubank? Lol

Or pressure fighters like Cal and Collins?

I think he could beat Ward because Ward is juts a defensive boxer and Jones will take him out.

Eubank clearly won eight rounds against Malinga and Close (I) in 4th or 5th gear - forget the scorecards. The Eubank-Tony Thornton fight was a much closer, far more competitive affair than the Malinga or Close fights.

Thornton was a classy operator, looking so against Sosa in a very good display of technical skill (closing the ring down, cutting off the corners, throwing short sharp rights and hooks and using a peek-a-boo defense well) - Sosa was extremely dangerous and extremely awkward to beat at that time.

Eubank-Thornton is scored a draw by many (not including myself) who prefer workrate over ring generalship.

 

I don't have a problem with your rankings. But you saying Jones gets his ass kicked against elite boxers is complete hogwash. And If that is the way you feel, he doesn't need to be in your top 5, or it just goes to show your lack of knowledge for the sport, as there were many elite boxers at SMW. Your post also contradicts itself as you say he would take out Ward who is an elite boxer.

Newsflash, James Toney was not only an elite SMW boxer, but flat out one of the best boxers alive in any weight when Jones spanked him. He also usually did much better against the common opponent than anyone at the weight.

SMW Jones looked damn near unbeatable, I have no idea how you came up with these conclusions.

Eubank called it "suicide" Calzaghe knew his "limitations."

This cannot be completely disregarded in my opinion when naming someone the GOAT at SMW.

It is a lock for Calzaghe in my opinion, just because his SMW resume was so deep, and he has no losses... But the head to head monster in Jones, was also unbeaten at his short stay at the weight, looked as invisible as a fighter we ever had on film and took out P4P James Toney with incredible fashion, also taking out common opponents better than ones in the discussion.

If Calzaghe had lost to Kessler, I would have Jones as the ATG SMW, and a lot of that would be based on my opinion of Jones' h2h ability.

 

I come up with these conclusions using common sense.

1) Toney and Ward are both defensive boxers its why I'd favor Jones over him & Ward.

2) Collins beats the crap out of Toney

3) So does Eubank

4) If you took into consideration boxing styles when deciding about a top five of a boxing division you'd understand why I chosen Calzaghe(Who Jones avoided), Eubank(Who Jones avoided) and Collins(Who Jones avoided) above your male crush.

5) Toney is in my top ten for sure. Is he better then Ward?
In my humble opinion Ward is harder to hit, thus harder to beat.
Do you get the logic behind my thought process?
