So Cotto has a more technically sound cutman than Pac. Interesting.

I do not agree! Mosley is the only Hall of Famer that Cotto has ever fought and already past his prime, A Decade his senior and not on his best fighting weight.

Anyway to answer the question Cotto is definitely the better technically sound Boxer.. But Manny Pacquiao p4p has definitely more Special Talent as a boxer by a mile compared to a Textbook, ordinary Cotto. :bbb

Mosley my friend is not past his prime. And for anybody to beat Mosley in his own game is something.

What especial talent are you talking about? :think

If your definition of technical fighter is in the mold of Mayweather, then neither are technical. For starters, both do not know how to fight moving backwards. Although I still have to see Pac fight backwards, I have seen Cotto do it against Mosley. And it was not actually a pretty sight. It looked like a DPL fighting backwards against Penalosa but probably a little prettier but not by much.

One thing that both are good at is pure aggression, nonstop punchfest. ALthough Cotto probably throws his punches in combination with more repertoire than Pac, which could be a criteria to say that Cotto is more technical. However, Cotto had not faced the quality of opposition that Pac has faced. An objective basis for assessing Cotto's technical superiority over Pac would be when Cotto faces a very good counterpuncher who also is good at backward in the mold of FMJ or JMM. Then we could see how he his punch output would be affected. Except for Mosley, most of Cotto's opposition tend to try to exchange mano-a-mano against him which is entirely a wrong approach to fighting Cotto.

Whereas, Pac's opponents lately tend to copy JMM's blueprint of fighting Pac, which negated his natural style of pure aggression. Even Solis was successfull when he was counterpunching, despite the disparity in the power. How Pac evolved to fight the style of enemies is evident. By adding the right hand as an offensive weapon and learning to box, Pac somehow is just doing fine. Infact JMM jus outpunched Pac the entire 12 rounds by more than a dozen, which says a lot because JMM is supposed to epitomize the "counterpuncher" fighter (let the opponent punch and miss then counter=more punch connect than your enemy).

There is basically no way of saying that Cotto is better technically then Pac and vice versa. Admittedly, Cotto really throws the more varied repertoire of offensive weapon and in perfect combination, while Pac is almost always a left hand crazy fighter despite what Roach says to the contrary. If this is your definition of technical, then we can say that indeed Cotto wins it. However, the important thing is the win column. Pac's apparent lack of "technicality" is effective even against the most technical fighters (Ledwaba, JMM, EM, MAB) that to say he is not technical might be a misnomer. He is not technical only because he did not fall into your preconceived criteria of technical fighter.

Being entirely an offensive fighter itself needs technical skill although probably in the offensive mold. Example, how to throw punches properly that even the most technical defensive fighter would have no answer to it is a technique that Cotto and Pac mastered, and even Vasquez and Rafa. the most important thing is its effectiveness. it may be a one hand punch but it would always connect regardless how technically superior the opponent, then that person basically is a technical grandmaster in the offensive mold.

After my long senseless dissertation, I come to a conclusion that both Pac and Cotto are technicality superior offensively than most boxers and are probably equal by virtue of the results of their fights.

    Cotto by a mile,

It's pretty obvious his technique and boxing abilities are alot better than Pacquiao's to anyone who has seen them both fight.

Cotto overall in terms of varied repertoire of punches, ability to throw in combinations from anywhere in the ring, and ring generalship, but Pacquiao's chin, handspeed, and footwork are superior.

One of my favorite finishing KO's is when Cotto took out Pinto. The only thing close to that I can remember Pac doing is when he knocked Morales down the second time in their 3rd fight, and even then, in a 4 punch combo, 1 or 2 still only grazed him.
