Im not a great boxing historian and have only seen about 10 Aaron Pryor fights, all which i own. To me it seems the guy is completely underated and overlooked. For me he is an absolute beast at 140lbs and i would be hard pressed to name a fighter ho could possibly beat Hawk at that weight. So why did he not get the big fights? Imagine Pryor vs Duran, Pryor vs Leonard, Pryor vs Hearns. Who takes it? More importantly WHAT TIME IS IT!!!!
He is not underrated or overlooked. He gets his credit as one of the greatest 140 lb. fighters ever, and was ranked highly (in fact, too high) on The Ring's Top 80 Fighters of the past 80 years list in 2002. If anything, he gets overrated by people on boxing forums, who watch too much Legendary Nights. He would have a better chance against Duran than he would Tommy or Ray, but I would have to make him the underdog against the more polished Duran at a matchup at 135-140. I don't like his chances at all at 147 against the likes of Hearns and Leonard. He was better suited at 140 or even 135 where he was ranked.
His resume at 140 isnt as impressive as some of his peers but most consider him just about the best H2H fighter at the weight..Me included..I dont usually do that without the record to back it up but the Hawk is an exception. I personally probably overrate him but not without good reason I feel. He wouldnt fair so well at 147 against some if not most of the greats there..I think he is one of those fighters where the 140-147 jump would be a little to much..Recent examples would be Hatton and maybe Cotto..So strong and physically dominant at 140 but not so strong in the next division. Aaron might of experienced the same difficulties, especially against top notch opponents.
LMAO My bad, 'WHAT TIME IS IT'?!!!!! I feel he does not get the recognition he deserves, in the respect he gets over shadowed by the fabulous 4 of his era.
Poor resume. Only 2 good names, one way past it (Cervantes), and one past it (Arguello). He's not underrated, if anything he's a bit overrated. He gets a lot of credit for beating Arguello who by that time had fought 74 fights already and was naturally the smaller man fighting out of his prime weight class, and still gave him all he could handle for 14 rounds. Not to mention he had a little help from that black bottle. If anything that fight showed how good Arguello was.
hard to say that he's over or under rated but for non-boxing fans its easy for him to fly under the radar. as said before, he fought in the times of some stellar well known names. the truth is in his dominant division the competition was scarce. he could never get the fight against leonard.
with his style he would be difficult for anyone. :bbb deffo one of the greats for me. despite his lack of big big names aside from arguello (twice) and cervantes.
Pryor vs Kameda what was that all about, how many KO's, slips etc... entertaining stuff none the less...
