cocaine and water? what the hell does that do for the body? Whatever it was it could never revitalise his body the way it apparently did for the 14th round.
Yeah, I'm sure Duran was shaking in his boots of a guy like Pryor who had about a dozen pro fights when Duran left 135 for good. Hell, Pryor was a ranked contender (by the Ring) at 135 before he was ranked at 140.
So he bypassed a green and not yet champion Pryor to go for the "easier" option of Leonard? I always knew Duran was a *****
Duran would have eaten Pryor alive. Anyway, his chin was damned good at 140 but whenever it's mentioned as one of the greatest of all time I cringe. He's obviously not a fighter that could have moved up to 147 and taken clean shots from the likes of Tommy Hearn's as he did Argeullo. When he did move up against Bobby Joe Young, a solid hitting welter, this showed. He was past his best but still coked out of his brain, which as far as I know isn't particularly detrimental to a fighters durability.
As he would the ageing Cervantes (or any version for that matter), Muangsurin, Kim or anyone else worth fighting at 140 at the time he moved up..It would have been nice for him to bag another title at another weight, Cervantes would have been a great name to have but fighting Palomino and especially fighting Leonard when he did far outstrips this.
Duran was actually supposed to move up to 140 in the mid 70s to fight Cervantes, but Duran's manager Carlos Eleta nixed the deal. Same thing early in Duran's reign at 135 against an aging Carlos Ortiz in a non-title bout. For some reason, Eleta didn't want Duran to fight Ortiz so they made up an excuse that Duran was sick. Buchanan ended up replacing Duran's spot on the card.
Yeah I knew about the Cervantes fight not coming off because of that..Didnt know about the whole Ortiz situation, interesting...Would have been a meaningless fight though. That fight was on the Patterson-Ali undercard I believe..Poor old Carlos was done, Kenny ran right through him.
