Naz and Lennox would get my vote, because they were the big names I was allowed to stay up and watch as a kid
God, look at Eubank's body at the Calzaghe weigh-in! [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FrP-H55zpIY[/ame] He looked scary despite the goofiness.
I saw a lot of Hodkinson Vic right back from his amateur days, I was even at his debut on the Bruno Witherspoon undercard-
for me its Jamie Moore was only mildly interested in boxing when i caught his fight with rhodes.went to youtube and watch his one with macklin been my favourite since
I could choose Silky Jones due to my family links with him. I could Joe Calzaghe who has given me such joy watching him over the years. I could choose so many for so many different reasons. But i'm ganna have to go with that friendly giant because of what happened on that rainy day. Lennox Lewis- I revere the man. Have so much admiration for him. His calmness, his serenity and down to earth personality. I followed EVERY step of his career closely. They say never meet your heroes but Lennox Lewis is the exception. Everybody should meet this man. Pure gentleman. I don't really even need to talk about his fight game or his accomplishment, although i could do it all night and day. They're no secret to anyone. I'll talk about his grace and dignity, his spirit and love for humanity. I will never forget meeting him when i was a lot younger on a rainy day. I wasn't dissapointed. Lennox walked into a big grathering of adoring fans, there i was in the crowd. It was raining outside and i had had a sh*tty day. Took me hours to get to this function. We waited, some patiently, others irritated because nature had messed up their hurried day. I was starting to get lost in the sight and sound. Finally, Lennox walks by the crowd almost silent in awe! This majestic man, but no bells and whistles - no enhancements. No security guards or belligerent hangers-on. what aura this man possessed. I was in a daze...the crowd was cheering something but i don't know what. I couldn't hear and it didn't matter to me because i was transfixed. He keeps walking...Giving EVERY soul a special look, everyone a special glare. He appreciated us all. Something was in the air by the time he got to my end...I felt more special to him then most. He seemed to picked me out, perhaps seeing the Lennox Lewis merchandise that was draped all over me...He puts his giant hand out. The hands which crushed so foes and would go on to slay so many beasts! The worries of the day had subsided. All the memories of cheering this man on, staying up late at night and praying he would win...it all came pouring in as a welcome reprieve. I was standing in front of THE great Lennox Lewis. Magnificantly decked out in a long black overcoat. Shinny shoes and a blue tie. So this is really happening? to me? I paused for a moment and thought what to say? Lennox picked up on my nervousness. He realised this was a moment when innocent trust could be natured and bloom into faith, or crushed and forever lost. He gave me a traditional brotherly handshake and a little hug. With a whisper of 'how's it going, bro'. A weight was lifted off my shoulders. I no longer felt just another face in the crowd. Lennox treated me like a friend he'd known all his life. Made me so much at ease. This for me was a moment of affirmation in a relatively young boxing fans life. From that moment, on that rainy day. Mr, Sir Lennox Claudius Lewis has held a special place in my heart. Salutations Lennox.
I myself have never before considered this question, but off the top of my head I'd have to say Lennox *(assuming he counts as "British" in the context of this thread).
Joe Bugner. Everyone says I'm nuts for being a Bugner fan (prime Bugner), but I liked him. Outside of Ali, Foreman, Frazier, Norton in the mid '70s, Bugner (on his best day) might have been the best heavyweight going.
