Who's your pick? Prime Roy Jones vs. Chad Dawson at 175

I am a big Chad Dawson fan and he is the best lightheavyweight in the world right now but beating a Prime Roy Jones? Come on

 

Dawson would give Roy some problems.

 

RJJ is prime at 168 or maybe even 160, where he's probably the best to ever lace them up in both divisions. That said, he takes care of Dawson in a yawner, and everyone immediately downgrades Dawson's talent about four notches and says RJJ never fights anyone tough.

 

Jones would have to much respect for Dawson's offensive abilities to push for a knockout.

Roy would circle and potshot using superior quickness while being conservative, taking a lackluster 8-4/9-3 decision.

I love Dawson, but a prime Jones he is not. Bad matchup of styles here, though. Agree that prime Montell would have been very tough on Chad due to his unorthodox style.

 

When did he ever do that? Most fighters that came forward got decimated by straight right hands and left hooks. (Roy was basically a brawler in the ams. People **** all over his chin now but he wasn't exactly a soft target in his prime.)

 

What about when he broke Virgil Hill's ribs with a single body shot in the 4th round?

Virgil wasn't prime, but it was still an impressive way to knock somebody out though.

I think what we have to bear in mind is that it's extremely difficult to knock out an opponent who spends the whole night backing off. Most of Jones' opponents at 175 did exactly that. The occasional opponents that had the bottle to step forward and roll the dice (e.g. Richard Hall) took an absolute pasting. Jones' power may not have been quite the same as it was at 160-168, but it was still pretty epic.

 

Not sure I buy this. Southpaws are vulnerable to the left hook and the straight right - Jones two best punches. He would repeatedly counter the right jab with whipping left hooks. He fought huge numbers of southpaws in his reign at 175 and pretty much whitewashed the lot.

As you stated Richard Hall came forward. As did Gonzalez and Louie Del Valle. I'm not saying he was a feather fisted fighter, I'm saying his power was mortal at LHW. This combined with the fact that he never went for a KO out of fear of giving somebody the McClellan treatment means there's an 80% chance he goes for the decision here.

 

I agree... By the time Jones moved up to LHW, he really wasn't going for knockouts (save the second Griffin fight) But he did still have the power to end someones night with either hand, there is always that chance.

 

Jones by destruction, people are starting to forget how good Jones was, I can't believe this one is even being debated!
