Reid won that fight (he was robbed in Germany, too).

Joe's engine, output and chin make him a tough night for anyone. But a prime RJJ would outclass him, and Ward would find a way to slow him down and take over, IMO.

Btw, Reid was a really good fighter. I liked Robin. Kind of one-dimensional, but I enjoyed watching him fight. Didn't always get the luck of the draw, but he had a career he can be proud of. I do think he beat Joe (as do many) that night. Great amateur, though!

Calzaghe's win over Kessler is way better than Ward's, yeah. No doubt about that. Made a thousand adjustments over the course of the fight to remain in control (even as Kessler heroically made his own adjustments, in vain, always just a step behind) and he even hurt Mikkel pretty bad to his body and if he really pressed the issue and sat down on them (China hands or no) might've put him on the canvas with body shots.

..and Kessler was unbeaten and with sky-high confidence in himself.

 

Yeah, don't hear Reid mentioned all that much but he was definitely among the few super middles in that era that was actually kind of special. Very good name on Calzaghe's record (though obviously there is some dispute as to whether it should be a W :yep)

He wasn't technically gifted, he wasn't fast, and he was extremely small, with a height of 5'10, a weight of 180-190 pounds, and he also had a ridiculously small reach of 68"

Lennox may have been a better fighter, and he may have beaten better fighters, but Rocky achieved more under the circumstances.

The average LHW today is probably as big as what Rocky was.

All things considered, his record of 49-0 was an incredible feat.

Froch was the second best SMW in the world for a long time, and one of the best of the last 15 years. And Ward handled him with supreme ease.

Joe's biggest wins are against who? A product of American hype in Lacey and a Kessler that gave him a tough fight? Or was it his last two wins against meant with a combined age of 82?

The fact that an outsider to win that tournament SCHOOLED an opponent who was Joe's best win speaks volumes!

Dirrell and Ward were rank outsiders and nobodies at the start of that tournament. Kessler was supposed to clean up, Ward left him looking like a mess. And that's Joe's best win. Hardly lost a step by the time Ward got to him as well.

He was kind of a triple-threat, as far as mainstream visibility goes. He was 1) skilled enough to be a rankings mainstay and punch his way consistently into high-profile (and, consequently, televised) matches, 2) always exciting to watch, having a true man's-man pugilist disposition and press-ahead style, and 3) could make ladies the world over cream their panties, if he were to have become more well known internationally.

 

This is a myth actually. Kessler was the favorite (Abraham the co-favorite, which is actually way more embarrassing atsch) to win the S6 but even back then you could find some dissenting voices praising Ward's appearances on ShoBox and giving him a very good chance.

 

Reid lost his next fight after that.

He didn't earn one.
