Tough pick. Probably Mayweather - if he keeps it. Then Marciano. Then Ottke or maybe Calzaghe. Lopez' record has holes in it too but he could sit at third as well (though he has a draw). Whether by circumstance or not, Rock did not defeat GREAT versions of Walcott, Charles, Louis, or Moore. Without exception they were either old in years (Louis 39, Walcott 38 & 39, Moore 39) or old in ring years (Charles 95-96 fights, Moore 176 fights). Charles fought Marciano in two consecutive fights when he was 33 and these were his 95th & 96th professional fights - that is a lot of wars. (Rock got a tough 15 round decision, and badly cut in the second fight, KOd Charles in the 8th). Ezzard fought five more years getting something like 10 more wins but 13 losses. Rocky was 30 and 31 years of age in his two fights with Charles. Jersey Joe Walcott fought Marciano in two consecutive fights (and then retired) when he was 38 and 39 years old. These were his 70th and 71st professional fights. Rocky was 29 years old so Joe was giving up 9-10 years. Archie Moore fought Marciano once when he was just about 39 years of age. This was something like Archie's 176th professional fight. Rocky was 32 years old in this fight. Joe Louis fought Marciano once (and then retired) he was half way to 38 years of age in the KO loss. It was his 68th professional fight. Rocky was 28 years old so Joe was giving up ten years. At least Mayweather has the accomplishment of rising through multiple divisions and still winning titles (though not cleaning them out, taking all comers, or dominating). Calzaghe struggled with so many guys. The first 20 odd fights were the normal combination of 4 rounders, bums, near bums, old men, and fat guys. He outclassed the classless. Nearly all of his career KOs/TKOs came against scrubs. Then he fought a far past peak Eubank and started well, struggled for the remainder of the fight and was hurt at the end of the 12th. After eating a ton of right hands against last minute Eubank he said forget that, and went back to two defenses against bums. Next, he struggled with Calzaghe-level Robin Reid. He also struggled with Starie. He next fought Calzaghe-level Omar Sheika and while winning he got a ridiculous ref stoppage on a cut in what could have been an interesting fight. He went back to fighting bums or relative mediocrity among which he didn't look very good against Brewer. He defended against a few more bums and then got dropped by Mitchell, closed his eyes and dropped Mitchell, then got Mitchell stumbling and with 15 seconds left Joe's personal (predisposed) ref came to his aid and called that fight (no sense taking any more risk with Mitchell). Joe then defended against another bum. Then he fought a guy he expected to handle easily and got dropped by Salem and Joe looked absolutely Salem-level. After that scare he went back to defending his "title" against two bums in a row. Then, after wanting to pull out at the last moment against Lacy, he had no place else to run so he screwed up his courage and dominated a muscle-bound (I can't move my arms but I look great when I pose) Jeff. Next, he looked absolutely **** against a tough Bika. Then he defended against another bum. Then, he came through with a gutsy performance against the equally overrated and rarely tested Mikkel Kessler. Finally, he fought two battle worn old men (though ATGs) and got an ugly split decision (in which he looked a near amateur) and a clear win over Roy Shot Jones (though he got dropped by both Hopkins and Jones). Clearly, many if not all of these undefeated records don't mean ****. It is who you fight and when you fight them that matters.
