Why a catch weight to fight Chris Algieri?

Far too much attention focused on catch weight fights......they've always been apart of the sweet science and always will. Enjoy the fights and appreciate the performance.....let's not let the newly formed criticism of catch weight fights skew what happens inside the ring.

 

I don't think it was days before the fight that Floyd paid Marquez to come in heavier. It was the day of the weigh in ..... I could be mistaken.

 

Isn't Algeri a Jr welterweight? Forcing him all the way up to 147 without having ample time to acclimate and adjust to the higher weight is actually better for the kid. Saving him from himself becuase he says he wanted to come all the way up to 147 for Manny...... But I think the kid needs all the help he can get......even if he says he doesn't want/need it.

 

It depends I your perspective. It might not make sense to you, but for Manny, his goals and future plans give him a different perspective.....for those who have no qualms with catch weight knowing the history of the sweet science, catch weight fights arent viewed as a detriment but a bridge to help fights manifest between fighters operating in two different weight classes. The whole negative spin on catch weight fights is kind of a new thing...... No one had a lot of issues with them prior to Floyd stirring the pot to take shots at Manny only to turn around and do it himself.

 

It wasn't.. it was changed at the weigh in. I remember watching it like wtf is going on. But Jmm was too much of a warrior to walk away and Floyd knew this. Marquez and Nacho had no idea what was going on..

 

That isn't true. People sneered at SRL vs. Lalonde, for instance.

 

Did they sneer at Whittaker vs. Chavez?

 

Some....but not all. The super middleweight division was newly formed and catch weight fights didn't have the kind of negative spin back then that it does now. For instance..... People NEVER call SRL a 4 divison champion ...... He's always a 5 division champion.

 

Great fight.....happy they made the fight which meant so much at the time.... It's a very similar situation between Manny and Floyd only both sides wanted to fight each other..shame about the outcome.

 

I agree, I know the reasoning behind it but in reality all the junior and super weight classes in my opinion are already catchweights, it waters down the sport, and those that say it makes for fights we wouldnt be able to see otherwise is complete bullroar, going up and down in weight is a challenge to the boxer in question and shows your greatness. Your advantage in a fight should be based on your skill in the sport not on your negotiating tactics.

 

The fallout didnt come from the fight being held at 168 for the new title, but from the fact that the LHW title was on the line too, making it a "catchweight" fight instead of a SMW title fight..

 

In reality negotiation tactics or mutually agreed upon terms don't change or predetermine the outcome of a fight..... It is and always has been about the mettle, will, skill and determination of the two fighters. Now...... If there's an unfair advantage of physical dimensions and weight, that's a different story. A good big man will ways beat a good small man.....feel free to insert "great" for good depending on the level of fighters in question.

It reminds me of the Attempt at winning the LHW title by SRR.....he was without question the better boxer but couldn't over come the physical disadvantage to capture the crown. A catch weight fight would have leveled the playing field.

 

You are mistaken. Marquez agreed to a 1.2 M pay spike, before the weigh in, to escalate the weight maximum.

 

No doubt.....but there was very little "fall out" compared to how fans seem to over react to catch weight fights in present day boxing. I just sit back and remember when there was less *****ing and moaning about things like this. Fans today are a lot more sensitive in my opinion. It takes away from the sport in my opinion. I just wanna see good fights being made and making it a fair fight is a plus.
