Why Ali is the greatest of ALL TIME in his prime

He's the greatest because he kept on saying it and people believed him.

 

He is the greatest heavyweight of all time because he beat other great heavyweights, not because he told us so.

Of the top 10 greatest heavyweights of all time Ali has victory over 3 of them. No heavyweight could boast of such accomplishment.

Ali fought some the greatest punchers in history such as Sonny Liston (at the tender age of 22), Ernie Chavez, Ron Lyle. and George Foreman (past his prime).

They say he couldn't punch but he was the first and only fighter to stop George Foreman when he (Ali) was passed his prime. Something modern heavyweight could not accomplish.

Ali also defeated so many contenders that could have been champion at different eras.

He was also the first fighter to stop prime Sonny Liston, something many believe was impossible at the time.

Any version of Clay would of been in a life and death struggle with a motivated frazier and a good clean ref

Couldn't you say this about practically every top contender that has the misfortune of fighting at the same time as a dominant champion?

 

I do rank Ali #1 at heavyweight, but he's usually overrated H2H primarily because people treat him as a demi-god and like to put the best aspects of his pre and post exile attributes together to create a fighter that probably never existed.

Post-exile Ali lost some movement, but the added bulk and maturity helped his punch resistance. Pre-exile Ali would've still gotten hit against guys like Frazier, and there's a better chance he'd have gotten knocked out. Post-exile Ali wouldn't have been fazed by a Henry Cooper.

 

And the 'greats' he beat were only considered greats because they gave Ali a tough fight. They all lost to bums, so they were not greats. Ali is basically a good fighter but a brilliant salesman.

 

Again, look at the first five rounds of Frazier vs Ali II. The movement of that version of Ali is too much for Frazier to handle. Imagine a much faster version of that for the whole fight. Frazier's not putting hands on that Ali. And besides that, it's just like everything else, you're assuming that Ali's punch resistance wouldn't be as good, I assume it would be. He took "harder shots" from fighters pre-exile after the Cooper fight and before and wasn't fazed, it was just that he got caught by a near perfect shot he didn't see while he was clowning so he could get his round prediction correct against Cooper as to when he was going to stop him(and besides that, it wasn't prime pre-exile Ali).

 

When do you consider to be Ali's prime? Before the forced inactivity?

All before the lay off was by far the greatest heavy of all time and i wonnt argue with saying he was the greatest fighter period, the post lay off ali was still prob the greatest heavy of all time and he was a lil slower and got hit a tad more. Still he is the benchmark which all fighters are compared along with robinson.

 

Ali was the complete fighter speed, skill, heart. Wasnt the best textbook fighter technically but he fought his own style like jones jr but with a heart of a lion .

 

Ali was a monster pure and simple.
