I can't believe this to be the case. Clottey had to know that wasn't going to happen in Cotto's back yard.
Clottey WAS trying to engage Cotto to continue the beating but Cotto was RUNNING away. I mean when Cotto had Clottey in the corner in what, round 10? He unloaded and then the camera zoomed in to Clottey who just shook his head. The camera kept panning out... and panning out... I was like WTF is Cotto... and then it showed him literally on the other side of the ring. I mean what the **** is that about? He unloaded some shots then just run away across the ring.
I agree absolutely. Before, people were dissing Cotto for having no heart, no chin, no guts, no stamina etc. He showed last night he could take a beating, fought on despite a very bad cut and ignored several opportunities to get the fight stopped and showed great ring generalship when it counted. I wasn't a Cotto fan - until last night. It was a very close fight, but he deserved the nod.
Exactly. Clottey gave away the championship rounds. All he had to do was throw a few punches and he could have won. He didn't dig down deep when he needed to.
Cotto was boxing and moving in the championship rounds. He was doing exactly what he needed to win. Cotto was the one initiating for the first two thirds of the fight when Clottey was being immobile and inactive for long stretches of time. He was happy just to put his hands up and absorb what Cotto was throwing, without throwing anything of substance back - or at least not often enough to make an impression or to capitalise on whatever dent had been made. Not that Clottey didn't have his moments, he obviously did... But, there was no consistency, or tactical thought, and when Cotto did get on his bike, Clottey didn't have the capabilities to cut off the ring and pin Cotto down - thats not Cotto's fault, thats a flaw in Clottey's game.
well said Cotto showed himself to be the better boxer on the night WITH a massive cut blinding one eye! some people will hate no matter what..... at least we all know he won and how good he is :good
****ing hell i agree totally. Cotto has beaten Mosley, Judah, Quintana, Urkal and now Clottey who were ALL ranked as top ten contenders by ring magazine. He is ****ing 5 foot 7 and is pretty much the smallest guy in the division and he seems to get cut really bad cuts whilst putting on entertaining shows and WINNING last night was 115-112 or 114-113 cotto. I dont get how you can have hate for the man
I don't believe there is hate. Cotto is a tough, rugged, and skilled guy. I honestly don't know why in the hell he got in there and banged. He did though. By the late rounds he was running not boxing. Compubox doesn't lie man. He was out landed and less efficient. I think Clottey won the fight. I could also see a close Cotto decision. The indicator that he got jobbed was the long pause before the decision and the 116-111 card. Ish like that shows that they had no intention of letting Clottey win. You mean to tell me a 12th round KD would not have put Clottey ahead? C'mon man. That was home cookin'! The fact that boxing fans aren't all over this judge is beyond me.
Let the armchair critics speak bull****. At the end of the day Cotto has maybe the best resume in the sport today and proved that he is a great fighter and most importantly a great man. Even if he lost to Clottey and the match was so close that they could have given it to Clottey he still deserves respect. He could have quit after the six and won the fight without suffering all that came after. But he continued and risked his health for all the fans and some of the people that criticise him now. Props to both fighters.
My first impression of the fight, is that is hard to give Clottey 7 rounds. But I would have to see it again. Based on that, right now, I'd say minimum 6-6 + KD for Cotto.
It was in fact a good adjustment for me Shater. Cotto saw that Clottey wait him to finish the combination and when Cotto is taking a breather he was countering him with fast hooks. So it was a good tactick to retreat after his combination and not give Clottey a chance to counter.
