I don't necessarily agree, that being said I think Jones (yes this faded, discounted, over-the-hill) will beat J.C. (if it goes down) and I think Pavlik would starch J.C..
two words: kelly pavlik. pavlik looked very good a few weeks ago, and people have already forgotten jones' win over a shot trinidad. before the pavlik fight, it seemed like many were for a jones-calzaghe fight, but after the pavlik fight, everyone wants to see calzaghe fight him. as i stated in another thread, i'd be happy to see calzaghe fight jones, pavlik fight abraham, and the winner of those fights fight sometime next year in a megafight.
You finally admitted what everyone's been saying, that Roy Jones is past his best, and unfortunately he is the one type of fighter that will be severely affected as time ticks away. No one is saying that the guy still can't hold his own, the question being asked is can he cope with the problems Calzaghe will present. Styles make fights and gone are the days when Roy throws rapid combinations from every angle humanly possible. An old man named Joe Louis once stepped into the ring against an undefeated slugger named Marciano. Now Louis had the tools and experience to win the fights leading up to that bout AND hardly anyone believes that Joe would have lost at his peak BUT at his peak he was not, it had long gone and after a fair start Marciano disposed of him with brutal efficiency. That is one of many examples of fighters past their prime being able to win against fighters just below champion class but once they step up in class they are exposed as shadows of their former self. Ali, Tyson, Sugar Ray Leonard, etc, as well as fighters breaking down (Hearns, Chavez and Whitaker) have all been unable to replicate their great deeds of the past. While a great fighter like Roy Jones can still put on a show the problem arises when he attempts to respond under presure as he once could. He'll see the punches coming but won't move in time. He'll see the openings in front of him but they'll close before he can land. I remember telling anyone that would listen that champions can respond under presure and that Roy Jones would beat Tarver in their 3rd fight. As the fight progressed however I realised that he was not as brilliant as he once was. In fact he was now a mere mortal. I
I don't have a problem with it, as long as Pavlik-Abraham happens. I figured with Pavlik, it was either Abraham or Calzaghe. Unlike many fans, I'd rather see Pavlik-Abraham. And of course, should Pavlik win that, and Joe win, we can always get Pavlik-Calzaghe later in 2009.
