For me it was when he could have taken the technical decision on the cut eye against Clottey but chose to fight on.

Yep that's a great call, because on same card Calderon pulled a ***** move against Mayol when the fight was hotting up and cut was far better then Miguel's.

Remember the wink , Miguel is a legend!.

Yeah, and let's be honest, did opt out against Toni', but a man two divisions bigger with probably loaded gloves doing a Sebastian Lujan on his face? He took a big enough beating before he crumbled to get kudos from me.

Again, Pacqiuao laid one of the worst one-sided beatings I have seen at the top level for years on him, Cotto was een genuinely dropped for the first time in his career. Picking up hardly any stanzas but taking it nonetheless.

Again, not the most skilled or adaptable (either come forward or go back when ****ed with Miguel) but showed his heart with a killer: one of the P4P greatest.

The Clottey fight was immense, didn't get all the 'robbery' calls afterwards.

And yeah against Pac, he took a genuine beating for 5 or 6 rounds.

Yeah this was the point where I really started to respect him.

With Cotto you know he will fight anyone and isn't going to go around making ridiculous demands or making excuses. He even took the Margarito loss with a lot of grace. He is such an honest pro and comes to give the fans a good solid fight. He has the heart of a lion. His fight with Torres is one of my favourites... he really showed immense courage. I remember the post fight interview when he was asked if he was hurt in the second round when he went down. He said something like, "To be honest, not really but in the first round I was very very seriously hurt". It's honesty like that that fans want to see.

I get what people are saying here. I understand that the likes of Pacquiao, JMM, MAB and Morales are loved, but it doesn't seem they are on his level of popularity (JMM is close I think). Perhaps it's because he is a level below all these fighters (we as Brits hate people that achieve success too much), as well as his nice guy persona and his all action style of fighting the best around.

I dunno, while I respect the guy immensely, I don't feel the same love for him as a lot of you guys, and was cheering on Pacquiao that night

With Pacquiao you have catch weight bull**** and all the nonsense with the mayweather fight etc. With morales he has done some really disrespectful stuff to past opponents, standing over them and stuff. Barrera is widely respected about as much as JMM for similar reasons to Cotto.

The knockdown against Torres was a legitimate one. He claimed a push but Torres was just trying to avoid the clinch and didn't shove Cotto down. He had been on unsteady legs for a long time before he went down and a good jab, if I remember right, was enough to put him down.

Certainly not a devastating knockdown or anything but it was genuine and not a push as Cotto claimed.

Agreed. But his balance was absolutely all over the place so you can see how he would consider it a push.

Pacquiao's critics really **** me off with their 'catchweight king' bollocks. By my recollection, he has had 3 catch weight fights, one against Cotto, and one against a Middleweight Margo. The other catchweight (JMM 3), benefited his opponent more than Manny.
