Looking back thru an old issue of The Ring I noticed that in the Ask The Answerman section, Herbert Goldman said that Rocky Marciano's record as a Simon Pure was 8-4. Why are amateur boxers sometimes referred to as a Simon Pure?
I consider my self preety in the know with the Ametures and yet ive never heard this term berfore, maybe it was just a term Goldman coined or was it a widly used term
Its a term that was used alot back in the old days that means a pure amateur. Its used to describe a quality in a person, having different meaning for different people. In the case of Rocky I pretty sure that it was meant to be used as calling him a great amateur boxer.
I just realised it could be referring to the fact that Marciano faught under a different name in his first pro fight in order to retain his ameture status. The name Simon Pure probably refers to the fights he had before his time
If you google Simon Pure boxer then it appears to have been used a few times in the past to describe amateurs. Not something I have seen a lot of though.
