Seems kind of cowardly, but it seems to be happening more and more often these days. Gervonta Davis (lightweight) fights Hector Luis Garcia (super featherweight) Chris Eubank Jr (middleweight) fights Liam Smith (super welterweight) Joe Parker (heavyweight) fights Jack Massey (cruiserweight) Daniel Dubois (heavyweight) fights Kevin Lerena (cruiserweight).
Because A-list fighters and promoters don't want to take as many risks, and it's easier to get a fight made with a B-list fighter coming up in weight or else a cashout scenario like Spence/Garcia.
This trend did not start with Floyd lol. Floyd was almost always the smaller man in the ring. Tank drug up and dug up old af and small af opponents in LSC, Gamboa, HL Garcia, Ruiz, Cellular, etc. Keep in mind "Pitbull" was supposed to be a showcase fight and Tank arguably lost. Combine that w the joke Barrios fight where Tank won a trinket belt at 140...but required 135 for Ryan Garcia...Tank so brave. Obviously the whole Loma fiasco how Tank ducked him for like 11 years lmfao not to metion Teo, Haney, or Shakur - who Tank aint fighting And this is all of PBC. Thurman whole career has been 2 split decision wins over D Garcia and Porter. Aside from that he's been fighting journeymen or shot fighters and acting like he's good. Legit clown show...almost ended by Lopez/Collazo lol Deontay Wilder has 2 good wins his whole career and they were over the same person, Luis Ortiz, who was never a champion. Now he fights part-time and features on Malik Scotts OF Spence is a good fighter but he's always the larger man in the ring. His best asset is being bigger than his opponent and being able to cut weight.
Taking on opponents from lighter weight divisions, is nothing new. Dempsey had an easy (though very profitable!) defence against LHW Carpentier. And Carpentier himself flattened the much smaller Ted Kid Lewis in a single round of a gross mismatch. Joe Louis also needed just a round to dispose of LHW John Henry Lewis. Ali and Frazier both feasted on the much lighter Bob Foster. Carlos Monzon was somehow allowed a defence against the much smaller Jose Napoles. Another mismatch saw Schmeling pummel little Mickey Walker.
We can say the same thing for Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua, Deontay Wilder. They belong to super heavyweight, but they fight heavyweights.
In defense of Joe Louis, supposedly that fight was as a favor to Lewis, who Louis reportedly knew was almost blind? And he hoped to finish the job ASAP so as not to hurt him. Also, Salvador Sanchez and Juan Laporte took on Wilfredo Gomez who took on both Carlos Zarate and Lupe Pintor, and the beat goes on...
