Why are boxers of the past always the greatest?

Different times and boxing was more popular in other eras. The greats usually fought each other too and it was easier to draw more people in times such as the 70's/part of 80's/and some of 90's. Boxing just isn't what it was when Louis fought Schmeling in the rematch or when Ali and Frazier were fighting. Like I said, different times and now boxing isn't even close to being held as high of an interest like when the two fights I mentioned happened. Also, with multiple belts it's hard for fans to follow who "the man" truly is. Different times but greed plays a big part in every era though I doubt people got as ripped off as they do now.....

Not really. Back then and I mean BACK THEN, there were still catchweights but not as many as now. Not sure about catchweight title fights in the far past though. We can both agree that there would not be a WBC diamond bs belt in the far past.

Nah. Music actually was better. Movie storylines were better but the technology used to create today's flicks somewhat overshadows that. That's why a lot of the movies that have come out in the past few years have been remakes of older films - they can't come up with any better stories, but they can visually improve upon the old ones.

Art devolves over time. Science and technology evolve. Boxing is not art.

Boxers of today are physically superior for many reasons: training, "supplements".

I just know there was a time when fighters didn't duck each other, fought for barely any pay and for the most part couldn't juice up. The greats usually didn't have one-sided fights which is common and expected in this day and age. Today's fighters are more about BS achievements attained through careful matchmaking. The greats could and were beat.

Perhaps Pac, Mayweather, Klitschkos could beat some of the greats, but I don't have the same esteem for today's fighters and that's what it ultimately comes down to.

it just so happen that most great fighters of the past fought great fighters without too much politics. and those fights defines their career and legacy.

imagine if floyd & pac where in those era, they could have fought at least twice!

You mean why are the hundreds of great fighters from the century+ history of boxing better than the few top guys around today? I don't know, man. I mean, you'd think every generation would be witness to the greatest fighter of all time in each division that no one who ever lived could beat, but hey, boxing's just weird that way I guess.

I totally know what you're saying bro, athletes in every field are improving, man, and thats really, really relevant to boxing. Watch a modern day athlete like David Haye and then go back and watch an athlete from 50 years ago like Muhammad Ali  its just a joke trying to compare the old guys to this new breed of super fighters.

Exactly this. People only tend to remember the good things and push out the bad, in time these are good memories only for people, and they will be for us as well when we look back too.
Ever been to a funeral? People sitting there remembering only good things and sometimes things that aren't true at all? Its the same thing, even if a boxer is still alive, his career is dead once retired, and people tend to forget all the small ****, and only remember the big moments, and there may be only a few, over a 15-20 boxing career, but that's all that is needed.

Guy from the 60s-70s Bob Hayes was just as fast as Usain Bolt being Bolt was a physically bigger guy. Rampage Jackson considered hardest puncher in the world at 6'1'' 205 lbs he punches harder than both Klits what makes people think Shavers, Marciano, or Foreman couldnt match them? Some idiots need to get their heads out of their asses. The old timers paid their dues alot of good fights today, but need more elites fighting each other. Its sad when an old school fighter like Hopkins is doing just that; proving his older generation was better than todays. Imagine what a prime Hopkins would of done today with todays fighters with all due respect. Those are facts.

I have wondered the same thing and boxing seems to be the only sport in which there hasn“t been development. Joe Louis would have beaten Wlad - yeah right!

Todays athletes are in every sport (incl. boxing) bigger, stronger, faster than before and they train better, their nutrition is better than ever before.

Wilt Chamberlain would dominate in todays weak NBA
