In fairness though, Floyd is a natural 130 pounder, maybe 135. He doesn't really do dry outs either so there is a good 30 pounds weight difference.

If Sherk was to fight a boxer it would be more like Kermit Cintron who did answer the call when Dana White said Floyd could fight Sherk.

This whole MMA vs Boxing thing is a money making scheme otherwise there would have been some decent match ups made. I can't think of one fighter involved in all of this who isn't looking for a pay day. Mercer, Botha, Philips, Butterbean, Toney are all old, fat, past their prime boxers looking for pay days. The MMA wanting to go to MMA are guys like JDS, Belfort, Noons, Silva etc Young, fresh, prime martial artists who would put the work in to make the cross over.

I think Hopkins would do good in MMA. He loves to rush in and clinch and find ways to ruff guys up.

Why are MMA fans thinking this fight meant anything? Toney has been long gone, not even good in the sport of boxing anymore. On top of that he's a lazy fighter, no footwork, and no discipline

It's as simple as boxer vs MMA in a boxing match, 90% chance the boxer will win. Boxer vs MMA in an MMA match, 90% MMA will win. These percentages will always come down to the individual opponents.

A boxer competed against an MMA fighter in an MMA match, are people shocked at the boxer's loss? Why make silly excuses like this -

Don't know if you noticed but MMA did rule over boxing in this MMA bout... Would you be whining if Couture entered a boxing match and got knocked out? I don't think so. It was an MMA match, Toney didn't even get a single shot in before he was taken to the ground, smacked in the face a few times then nearly chocked out. It was a pathetically easy fight for Randy to win, as expected.

There shoudln't be boxing vs MMA. Boxing is a part of MMA, trying to use that small part as your entire offence is just stupid.

    Get over it.

Making good excuses always takes the edge off losing. I often think up excuses before I participate in anything, so I have no fear of defeat

Most boxing fans don't enjoy two men rolling around in their underpants.

    GTFO.

Maybe they do here on a boxing board, but you should read more from sherdog and the UG. They live for the fantasy dick measuring contest between the two sports. Its very important for them, and the Toney fight went from freakshow to a pivotal moment in MMA...or some ****.

I think both sets of fans are as probably as bad as each other.

I don't hate mma, I prefer boxing by a long-shot, but I don't hate the concept of mma itself. I understand boxing as a style within MMA is fair under the concept of mixed style fighting and Couture doesn't need to box Toney for "fairness." But I do think it's ridiculous when people suggest a technically sound boxer couldn't do anything in mma. If Lidel could sprawl and brawl with his less than spectacular punching, I think someone with decent footwork and handspeed carrying over into mma could very well go far.

The thing is Lidell also was a good wrestler. Couture knew Toney's weakness so he took advantage of it.

if it wasn't Toney it would have been another boxer. The point is boxing alone isn't good enough to compete with a fully rounded MMA fighter. A boxer with a wrestling background that could be a different story.
I'm not knocking boxing, i love boxing, muay thai, jiu jitsu and wrestling as all individual sports. But when you combine them you get MMA. I respect all these sports but a MMA fighter is a complete fighter.

and I'm not saying a top mma fighter could jump in with a world class boxer, i guarantee the boxer will out class the mma fighter in a boxing match.

and not all mma fighters are just wrestlers, look at silver, machida, rua all strikers but have a solid ground game too.

MMA fighters are more 'complete' fighters-to the extent the top practitioners have a basic grounding in both grappling and striking.

But when comparing to boxing it's like apples and oranges.

For example,is an elite competitor in the decathlon a better athlete than a top 100 m sprinter? After all the decathlete easily beats the sprinter in 7/8 decathlon events. Personally I can't answer that question.

Wow. You have mad skills. :blood

In all seriousness, in the event that Couture had found himself on the end of a right hand and out cold on the mat, it'd be the MMA enthusiasts who'd be showing themselves to be sore right now. Nothing exclusive to the Boxing community, circumstances have dictated this.

    in all seriousness, he didn't

in all seriousness, if germany won world war 2, everyone would be speaking german

in all seriousness, if porn backed beta, VHS would have been screwed

look, toney's **** talk is what spurred this fight, and what is causing those who only like boxing to cry foul, and those who only like mma to think they won some imaginary "who' sport is better" contest

if boxing had someone who wasn't a total ass say "hey, i think i have the skills to put up a good fight, and i think it would be a great event to bring these two sports together instead of push them apart" there wouldn't be all this nonsense

(oh, and there are quite a few who thought toney was actually going to win)
