Why are fighters so often called bums?

It seems to me that boxing is the only sport in which athletes who are among the best 5 - 20 in the world are often dismissed as bums. Nobody calls a decent NBA bench player a bum, when Roger Federer beats the Nr. 20 of the world, nobody says "oh, that win means nothing, he just beat a tomato can."

Why this total dismissal of fighters who are good enough to fight professionally at or near the top level? And why are successful fighters, who beat many good opponents who weren't ATG's often insulted as if they accomplished absolutely nothing of value? Calzaghe or the Klitschkos are good examples.

    Comments?

Because many so-called boxing fans are nothing but loudmouths who have no respect for anyone.

Haha! I often wonder this myself. There are a lot of negative opinions in boxing.

Also - One bad performance can ruin a career in boxing with everybody losing faith in a fighter, whereas if you have a bad game in basketball, soccer etc. you can just redeem yourself the next time out.

Boxing just brings out the rawest emotions, I guess. Gotta love it for that.

I think the term originated during the championship reign of Joe Louis. He was dispatching of opposition in such easy fashion that one writer termed his fights bum of the month club.

It is just a way of saying that you don't think that fighter is very good. It's just an expression guys.

Constructive criticism is a delicate art, isn't it? The word "bum" gets tossed around in the boxing world the way "sell-out" is tossed about in the music industry. The few times I got to spar with amateurs, I was weighing around Light Heavy and held my own. However, I know full well that I'd call myself lucky if I went the distance with anyone ranked in the TOP 100 in that pro division, let alone beat any of them. Some boxing fans can be loudmouths. There are fans like that in any sport. They aren't as bad as some (just go to a pro basketball game sometime, if you don't believe me), but the word "bum" really should be reserved for guys who really don't try (Golota comes to mind)or guys who really couldn't last two rounds with a journeyman fighter.

well you have to look to the defination of a bum/tomatocan:

A bum/tomatocan is someone your none-favourite fighter beat...

    Example: You're a Cotto-fan:

Hatton is nothing but a overhyped euro bum...

People think that since Boxing is a sport of aggression, putting people down makes them seem ferocious, I suppose.
