Don't give the blame to other sports i mean i donøt believe that's the only factor... there must be some other reason why fx overweight toney can be a contender today. What has changed? Don't know much about it, but could it be a cultural change - different life growing up and so on?
I think one reason may be because there are some huge heavyweights now (Lewis, klitschko's, Valuev, Dimitrenko, Hoffman, etc) the naturally smaller ones (Toney, Povetkin, Solis, etc) have to bulk up to close the weight gap a bit. Fighters like Povetkin are naturally small heavyweights so if he came in trim, yes he would be fitter and quicker but he would be to light and therefore lack the power to cause the bigger guys any real trouble. Infact Povetkin could possibly trim down to cruiser weight quite easilly so that shows how naturally small he is. I think this is one of the reasons why some people are calling for a super heavyweight division. Because of the influx over the last 10-15 years or so of these huge guys the smaller heavy's are having to bulk up to bridge the gap and are therefore not fighting at their peak weight. Saying this though, if you are going to bulk up then do it properly like Haye did. You shouldn't do it the Toney way. This maybe where lazyness comes into play. Its quicker and easier to bulk up in Burger King than it is down at the gym.
Cause the competiton sucks. Even some of the top guys know they can show up out of shape and still win.
Yeah i thinks that's part of it, but i think these smaller guys should just get it together, more like in the past where you had relative small guys in shape and taking the bigger guys out, not Chagaev style but frazier, tyson, charles style - they were really competetive. I think that the money is part of the problem with weight, it seems the motivation for, take the peter vitali fight, isn't really there no matter what the boxer says pre-fight. The structure of the alphabet-organisations prob makes fighters lazy - i mean if i were toney i would be pretty bitter when i looked at the rahman - klitshko fight. Anyway David haye is not that small, but he's good cause he show the kind of determination that the division needs
