whoa whoa whoa...let's not pretend like Bute has been taking on elite competition here. Hell, based on their resumes I don't think it's unreasonable to put Ward ahead of the other 168ers out there. You're point about Froch losing to Kessler and by the transitive properties is b-level is wrong as well. Froch earned his place in that tourney and fought like a ******* to get to the finals, and then Ward handled him with relative ease.
I would think most anyone could deduct that a physically prime undefeated World Champion and former gold medalist, who just beat some of the best fighters in the world at his weight, who has Ward's level of ring IQ and skillset, could beat a 46 would be 47 year old man. Ward isn't Pascal (who was clearly vulnerable and not skilled enough to handle Hopkins), and yeah in my opinion him beating Hopkins would be a no brainer, as it stands today.
Froch earnt his place, but hasnt looked convincing. Bute had a blip against Andrade, like many felt Ward looked lucky against D Boone. Now Ward deserves to be rated #1 now, but against every Bute/Ward common opponent, Bute has looked the better with clearer wins over Bika and Miranda
It is a big step to be assured that Ward would easily defeat Calzaghe, simply because he easily defeated Froch. As Ward said after the fight, any fighter that leaves his face open like Froch did, is going to get hit. Froch did not fight a smart fight, which is imperative against a smart fighter like Ward. Although Calzaghe had an odd style with somewhat slapping punches, he won. He would out smart, outmove, and out fight his opponents. In their prime Calzaghe and Ward would be an interesting matchup, not necessarily exciting, but interesting. I never thought Froch would defeat Ward, and I never saw him defeating Calzaghe, as much as he would like to believe he would.
He just fought and won, and we Americans need a new boxing hero. All of this is totally expected. It'll pass, just give it time.
What hype??? He went into the Super Six tournament with the rest of the top guys in his division, and he won it. In dominant fashion. That's proof, not hype.
