Why are people being so delusional about Ward?

Hype. I think the post of best SMW ever was hype, when I have shown 2 SMWs who beat 2 tougher fighters (respectively) in the same amount of world title fights.

Was Abraham a top fighter in the division? I dont think so

Fair point about Bika / Miranda. I will say this though, Boone was his 7th pro fight and if I remember the fight correctly, after the knock down he cruised to a pretty clear decision. Dragging up an early struggle doesn't really prove you're point, which I think is that Ward did well in the S6 but isn't a world beater yet?

While I also agree it's true that Froch didn't look amazingly convincing in his S6 wins I will say that is sort of what you get when you have evenly matched opponents fighting one another. To some degree we boxing fans have been conditioned with mismatches to assume that any 'star' needs to look sensational at all times when in the ring, which is a crap assumption since no one can always look great all the time. Bute has looked good, but his competition has been wanting (in my opinion that is), which leads me to think more highly of Ward at the moment.

At the same time given his relative youth and the talent that we can see, the seasoning he got in the tourney and style he fights in, I think it's a good step towards him having a better over all legacy when all is said and done then someone like Calzaghe, who (again, in my opinion) never really took the risks he needed too cement his 'greatness'. But I'm rambling...

The idiocy and insanity of this message board displayed in one post. Good job. Bailey here is symbolic of the decline of the sport of boxing. A guy over two years can beat Mikkel Kessler, Allan Green, Sakio Bika, Arthur Abraham, and Carl Froch, and this somehow is not good enough because Internet Message Board Warrior that doesn't know jack**** about the sport says there's a guy out there that over the same timeframe beat Librado Andrade, Edison Miranda, Jessie Brinkley, Brian Magee, Jean Paul Mendy, and Glen Johnson and this is somehow a superior list of fighters. People like bailey turn people off the sport because instead of the fans watching fights they just instead talk **** on the internet, leading to nothing ever getting resolved to the satisfaction of what remains of the fanbase.

    That's how the game works.

Give it a couple of weeks, it'll die down.

No, that's not a fact. That's an opinion. It can be a well-considered and highly-regarded and widely-held opinion, but it's still opinion.

I was wondering when this was going to start.

On message boards, whenever there's a big win, the hype train starts where people overreact to the person's win and make it seem like the boxing world has turned upside down.

Within a day or two, as a direct response to the hype train emerges the anti-hype train, where people overreact to the people overreacting and proceed to claim the big winner is, in fact, nothing more than average. They'll often go out of their way to dissect the winner's resume and conclude that there isn't a single name on there worth a damn. Then they'll end the point by claiming that this boxer would be destroyed by *insert name of ATG*.

    Never fails!

The truth is, this is a VERY strong SMW division, Ward dominated the field without much trouble, and established himself as the CLEAR #1 in perhaps the strongest SMW division in history. That alone should make him one of the top four SMW in its less than 30 years of history, and he has a VERY good chance within the next two years to establish himself as the GOAT at SMW.

    But he's not there yet!

why would anyone take you seriously when the name Calzaghe is mentioned you refuse to be objective.

Calzaghe smw reign was so bad that even brits had him an underdog against a fighter they had no idea about in Lacy. Calzaghe is slighly ahead of Ward at the minute but come on your dissing his fight with Abraham. well its a better win than Peter Manfredo.

Calzaghe took nearly ten years to get two belts at 168. As ive stated before Ward just has to show some ambition to surpass Joe as Joe's resume can be described as padded beyond belief.

I dont like to go by Boxrec logic but as everyone else seems to find it acceptable here goes.

When Calzaghe beat Manfredo, Manfredos Boxrec points started on 372 and finished on 306
Abrahams when he fought Ward started on 378 and finished on 283

Now heres the point Manfredos points were 372 from his previous fight before Calzaghe. Abrahams were 348 and went up from not doing anything.

Now at SMW since the S6 Abraham is 2-3 with his best win over Taylor coming off a KO loss and being 1-3 in his last 4 fights

Manfredo had lost a debateable SD to a future world champ, beat Pemberton coming off a loss also and undefeated Spina. Now thats not great but not worse than Abraham

I haven't seen too many ESB'ers claiming Ward is all that & chips. Maybe a few of the kiddies, but not most.

The bulk of the praise seems to be along the lines of: "Ward impressed me, he's better than I thought he was." Or: "Well, he didn't fight too dirty, which is commendable." Or: "He has great defense, very similar to Mayweather."

All of this is true, and none of it negates the fact that Ward is currently the boring king of a so-so division.

At the risk of sounding dumb, what are Boxrec points, and how are they calculated?

I've been a boxing fan since the 1970's, but never heard about this before. I only go to Boxrec to check stats and win-lose records.

No probs Cableaddict. I didnt realise this myself for a long while.
Choose a fighter who you want to look at the record of.
Under the section where it says their name under the biography part but above where their last opponent was, there is a part that say RATINGS OFF ON. Click the ON section and you can see the points the fighters earned and how

Lb St Kg | ↑date↓ | ratings off on
