Serious question looking at his biggest fights to date he has looked very unspectacular except for the Trout fight maybe, but vs Vanes, Molina, Angulo, and even Williams to an extent. I've seen the Williams fight and Lara did outbox Williams but looking at his face who could tell. People talk about his offense and his straight left but, that's really his only punch offensively he is really basic and spends to more time moving than actually using his offense. He doesn't have a high output or a really great punch variety, the biggest complaint is his doesn't really fight which is why he gets the criticism he does. Defensively people act like he's untouchable but he's shown time and again he can easily be hit, hurt, & dropped by average fighters. To his credit he has managed to pull most out, there comparisons being made between his current fight and Rigo/Donaire but Donaire is a higher skill fighter than anyone Lara fought. I don't like Rigo but I'll give him credit for winning vs Donaire in a snoozer who has Lara beat to deserve such claim. If your a Lara fan or not even a fan and just think he's the #1 JMW what about him makes you think that, because I personally don't see it.
Cause he has the "appearance" of slickness, even though he often fails at it and has a questionable chin. Mostly it was outboxing a shaken and timid Williams who looked like a shadow of his former self after getting put into a deep sleep by Sergio Martinez that got people on the Lara bandwagon. He is good, but he has weaknesses and lapses in concentration. He really doesnt like getting touched to the gut, and I think expends too much energy on too much wasted movement which also contributes to tiring himself out. Lots of people miss it, because he still moves a lot "in the large" even later into a fight - but if you look closely his concentration and fine movement slips a lot. Some people consider him Floyd 2.0 I consider him something more akin to Zab Judah 2.0
The Trout fight was perfect for him to shine. Trout doesn't have much power, and he was not going to win a boxing match versus Lara.
Lara has skill, that is pretty obvious. He seems to fight to the level of his opposition sometimes which makes him look unspectacular. He has good all around fundamentals but I wouldn't say he is exceptional at anything. Although the Molina fight was questionable, Lara has won all of his fights. The Williams decision was just bad. You could also ask why so many rate Canelo so high. His biggest win was eeking by Trout. He is no ATG, but he hasn't been outclassed and is a threat to anyone in that division.
For the most part people don't rate Alvarez at all, Alvarez-Trout was a close competitive fight that Alvarez won him taking Trouts 0 as it stands now is the best win between the two. I don't see how it would shock people if Alvarez outboxes Lara or stops him. And considering there level of comp is around the same I'd say Lara fighting down to opponent's level is a bad thing
Stylewise I feel that Lara has the advantage. Lara is no Mayweather, but he can move. He is unlikely to just allow Canelo to sit on his punches the way Angulo did... unless they get another tiny ring. Even then, Canelo was in bad trouble against Cotto so it's not like he can't be hurt either. Either guy could win, but I'm rolling with Lara on this one.
The general consensus is Alvarez is one dimensional but looking at the two Lara is more one dimensional between them. Lara is only a outside fighter that throws a jab straight left combo to keep his distance and get fighters respect that's his game in a nutshell back up one two. Alvarez has atleast shown he can bang at times, he can box, and he can be patient and counter, as well as play defense. Lara's best attribute is footwork but considering he's been caught by slower lesser skilled fighters its not saying much. I don't think Alvarez-Cotto fight comes into play Nelo was 18/19 and is rapidly improving Lara is around 30 and is as good as he's going to get from the looks of it.
