you got someone voting Clottey as the hardest puncher in the welterweight division, a couple making predictions of him to TKO williams, and one saying he'd be able to hurt Cotto at will.

Lets straighten this out. Clottey is strong, physically, and is built like a tank, coming into fights as 170 pounds :patsch but he is NOT very powerful.

a MASSIVE welterweight like him should have been able to destroy a shaky chinned former jr. lightweight in a few rounds, he did not. and landed everything but the ring stool, and ring posts on corrales.

Felix flores..another smaller man had been SPARKED in a single round by chop chop corley...still made it the distance with clottey.

yet you have idiots saying hes' more powerful than guys like cotto, cintron, margarito and williams. and saying he can tko proven durable guys like williams.

    madness.

His power is average or somewhat better than average. I wasn't aware that people were so high on his power. I haven't personally seen any of that talk.

Who has his power rated as highest at welterweight?

People say he's strong, maybe the strongest at 147, but they're talking about something completely different from KO power.

If anything his pop (which is average) is often under-rated, I've seen him referred to on this forum as feather-fisted. He isn't really.

His punching power is below average possibly less than Mayweather Jr. at 147. His handspeed and high guard makes him a formable opponent though to win on points but I can't recall a single solid fighter that he has stopped convincingly.

Guys if he was literally feather fisted he wouldn't have been able to hold guys off him and maintain their respect (especially, for instance, Margarito in the first four rounds of their fight). Granted, his tricky guard has a lot to do with him not getting mauled, but he does have just enough snap on what he throws to keep guys honest. It's not like he's literally constantly picking off shots with his guard, like he would have to if his punches were absolutely nothing. They aren't hard enough to really fear, but nobody seems to want to wade in and take a million of them to the jaw to try and crack his defense the hard way either.

He has some pop but he aint the hardest puncher in the division and I highly doubt he can hurt Cotto at will.

Indeed. Sometimes boxing fans say things that are just absurd. Clottey is an ordinary fighter, and an ordinary puncher. Williams is gonna destroy him.:yep

Executioner, i know you're going to like this reply.

At the end of the day, it is what it is.

Clottey is a big, rugged WW with good pop. I don't think anyone said he's a HUGE puncher with one KO power.

And yeah, i do think that if he fought Williams, he's got a shot at a KO. A long shot but still a shot. And not because he's got KO power but because he might accumulate a lot of wear on PW through consistent counter punching. You don't need power to KO people if you can time them running into your punches. Katsidiz/Casa and PBF/Hatton are recent examples. And if Forbes had ANY power, he might've KOed Berto a few times as he caught Berto running in which obviously creates extra momentum.

Clottey's defense would deflect most of PW's high output jab. If PW sits down on more of his punches, that's a different fight to score. But if PW just jabs away, i see Clottey countering effectively ala Quintana 1.

On a side note, Margarito threw almost 1,700 punches against Clottey when they fought and Clottey was never once stunned let alone hurt. He was not being pushed around by Margarito. Size wasn't a factor. The funny thing is, Paul Williams pushed around Margarito at times when they fought. So not only does Clottey have a super chin, he's got the size to fight with the big boys at WW.

In my estimation Clottey isn't amongst the top 5 welters in punching power. His best punch is his left hook which he tends to land with more of a slapping impact. I got Cintron, Berto, Williams, Cotto, and Margarito all ahead of him.

He is however #1 in defense. :deal

True that, I'm watching that fight right now...
But he managed to drop him quite a few times.

To answer your question, no I don't think he is a huge puncher, but I'd rate him definitely above average.
But his defense and chin are superb indeed.
