why are so many people fixated on Fury-Usyk?

Contrary to what his fans insist Fury's place in his own era is very unclear and he hasn't solidified himself as the best due to missing out on so many of his contemporaries. To make matters worse both he and Usyk seem well past their primes and I'm skeptical either are among the top 2 heavyweights in the world.

What makes people think the current version of Fury let alone the version that would be facing Usyk next year is still better than Jalolov, Hrgovic, etc? This is no longer the guy that beat Klitschko way back when Obama was president nearly a decade ago. At this stage why does it matter if they fight?

Fury looked far better v Whyte than Filip looked v McKeen.

First heavyweight undisputed champ since 1999 when lewis vs holyfield 2.
1999..... when bill clinton was still president, people are already out of college, having babies and working, pre 9/11, pre nokia 3310, when you hit it to britney one more time. Thats how long ago.
Thrilla in manilla is closer to the last undisputed heavyweight fight than we are now, let that sink in.
And you ask why we care about this match up!

It'd probably feel more exciting if Fury hadn't won the belt off a borderline fraud and then taken the **** out of his belt by ducking the fights people wanted to see in order to fight corpses and chase money outside of fighting actual boxers.

The man can box, and it was good to see that belt released from a hostage situation... It's such a shame it was just out of the frying pan and into the fire.

It's the first Undisputed Heavyweight fight in over twenty years, so that alone makes it important regardless of who the beltholders are. What makes it even more special is that there's no clear cut winner because of how skilled both champions are. Decent arguments can be made for why either guy would win, but at the end of the day there's only one way to truly know for sure.

It’s for an undisputed HW title which doesn’t come around often.

The fight negotiations have been protracted and difficult to say the least, with both camps blaming the other.

Fury fans and Usyk fans are quite polarized, with very few being fans of both, so there’s a general animosity there which keeps the discussion going.

Best based on what exactly? Fury's best wins are ages ago. Zhang's win over Joyce is definitely better than any Fury win post Wilder.

If you think that these two aren't the best. Fair enough, thats up to you.
I think you'll be in the minority.

There's a lot of skilled guys some of whom are being ducked and denied opportunities. Why are we to assume either man beats Zhang, Hrgovic, Sanchez, etc, etc. If Usyk fight them rather than Fury I don't see the problem.

People become great by beating their contemporaries. If Usyk beats Fury he's beating a guy who conveniently failed to beat Joshua, Joyce, Zhang, Hrgovic, Makhmudov, Bakole, etc, etc, etc, etc. How is this a meaningful win given Fury's failure to clean out his era?

What people think of Fury's abilities doesn't matter as much as him actually getting in and beating top contenders which Fury hasn't done.

So how does Fury not cleaning out "his era", equate to Usyk not deserving his accolades? You don't think chasing that undisputed title is worth it?

You mean why do people want to see the first undisputed champion of the most popular division after almost a quarter of a century?

    It's a mystery indeed, blimey.

There's a very real argument that Usyk would already be undisputed if it weren't for first Wilder and then Fury successfully avoiding Joshua...

And on that basis that he's quite possibly already beaten the second best fighter of his era - sure, we'll probably never know that, but a fairly strong argument can be made.
