Why are so many people picking Roy Jones Jr to win this fight?

Seriously? Are we all expecting Jones to somehow magically rewind the clock 8 years? I've tried not to watch old Roy Jones highlights, because it truly can **** up your perception. I make sure to stick to his last 3 fights. Just look at his leg movement, barely any! No workrate, lays against the ropes, this plays right into Calzaghe's hands. In reality Im sorry to say, I want Roy to win as much as anyone, but its a massive upmountain battle for him to win this. He would actually have to outwork one of the most busy fighters in the sport.

Roy Jones has the weight going for him. I dont see much else. Unless Calzaghe lays an egg can anyone explain how Roy is supposed to win this?

Because real fans are tired of all this crazy hype about Calzaghe.

I hate the hype aswell, but tell me. How the hell is a 39 year old Roy going to stop those thousands of slaps without using his legs?

After the Kessler fight, I said I'd never doubt Joe Calzaghe again. The only thing that stops him at this point is if he were to age overnight so even if that were to happen he's fighting a guy who's in the twilight of his career so it would just even things out anyway. Calzaghe wins a decision but Roy keeps it respectable and reminds us with a trademark flurry or 2 that he was once p4p #1.

Exactly. just like the 3rd Tarver fight. We see classic Roy then he goes back to not throwing any punches and laying against the ropes. After the fight people will say "Wow if he could have done that for the whole fight he would have...."

Actually, regardless of the opponent, the first sentence in my previous post does it for me.

I am a long time Roy supporter but I don't know why anyone picks Roy to win this fight. I think a lot of it has to do with what Hopkins did to Pavlik and though I think Hopkins is an all time great like Jones, there's one difference. Hopkins still has confidence, hunger, and a desire to win and close fights out when he can. Jones hasn't had a KO in six years which given his natural abilities, even at this stage of his career is pretty sad and telling of his mindset. Jones wants to play it safe, takes minimal risks if any, and his work rate is all but gone.

Hopkins proved that an older fighter can be competitive and better than a much younger fighter provided that fighter still has "the eye of the tiger". Roy's not hungry for a win, and could care less if he knocks his opponents out. Age isn't keeping Roy from being great.....Roy is keeping Roy from that.

I too want Roy to win badly but I just don't see it happening. I say Calzaghe by KO mid to late fight.

its because Roy isnt in his physical prime anymore. Whether he can get back to his physical prime or not will be determined Saturday night. Whats amazing to me is how if you ask anybody almost everyone will agree that prime for prime Roy would beat Calzaghe no question. Maybe that tells you all you need to know..

This is why people are picking him. Maybe they have seen something in Roy's training and attitude to suggest that he is actually motivated for this fight. What you have done is provided the best argument in favor of Roy Jones:

He has the physical tools to be great again, and if he just gets his mind right he will be unstoppable.

People like me are thinking he done got his ****in' mind right and is ready for war.

i didnt think that many people were picking him...

i think he 'could' win...based on that style of his that calzaghe wont have fought before and jones ability to land a big shot at any point..
i wouldnt bet on this fight...could go either way for me..most lkely calzaghe on points...but i wouldnt be a bit surprised to see jones behind on points in say the 9th and land a huge shot and spark calzaghe...

Thats just pathetic hating, its pretty clear Calzaghe is beyond the realms of "hype" nowdays. For most people its wishful thinking, they want to see Roy do his oldself justice one more time, most of the people suggesting Roy will win don't actually have a breakdown of how hes going to do it, because most indicators point towards Calzaghe on points. I think a lot of people are just picking him to show support out of respect for what hes done in the ring, as opposed to how good/bad he currently is.

People just want to see the upset in this one, not many wanted Hopkins to thrash Pavlik the way he did yet it happened. When people badly want things they don't happen.
