Because people on here aren't really boxing experts.

You listen to most boxing journalists (who have been in the game for over 40 years) and they will give the today fighter their props. i.e saying Pacquiao is the greatest fighter they have ever seen.

If you want to go that route then there are plenty examples like Danny Williams KO4 Tyson.

I will agree that many people don't understand that science has produced better boxers than the past, and that its hard to compare fighters of the past with fighters of today, but you used possibly the worst 2 examples you could think of.

It goes both ways. Some people say absurd things like 185lb Marciano would have beat 250lb Wlad. But they also say absurd things like David Haye would beat a prime Mike Tyson. The old fighters had lengthy amateur careers, fought in an era where there were multiple boxing gyms in every city, where the competition was much stiffer (there were many more people boxing) where there were many experienced trainers to pass on tricks and techniques, where they fought much more often. That doesn't mean an old fighter necessarily beats a fighter of the present day, but it certainly is a possibility.

there is a nostalgia wave on ESB but theres also a lot of dismissing of the ATG's on here as well - how often do we see fanboy threads claiming Ali wouldnt win around against Wlad or that Pac would KO SRR and Henry Armstrong with the same ease he dispensed with Hatton .

Folks have to find a balance between fanboyism and being a rose tinter .

Science has given the world better athletes but not better , more technical boxers - when the old time trainers died off a lot of the pure boxing knowledge went with them , aside from a few notable exceptions the top trainers today are more conditioning coaches than master ring tacticians .

I think fight fans tend to talk in extremes. For instance you have some fools who claim the Kbros H2H woud beat any heavyweight ever (hahahha) or that Joe is top ten ATG. Personally I think wlad would have trouble with the likes of Tyson, frazier and liston because of their style and would probably get KO at one point (way to slow and limited in his skills). He would also have trouble against Big guys like young george and shavers. because they are willing to go to war and take a punch to knock your head off. then you have the great boxers like ali and holmes that have the skills to deal with wlad slow 1-2, and hit him multiple times before he even gets a glancing blow. So what the fan who says Tyson KO wlad 1 is really saying wlad is not the best fighter head to head by a long shot.

you really cannot say nostagila when you are talking RJJ and Joe C. because they both fought in the same era. I personally hated RJ (and I am not even close to have any found thoughts of joe either) but I know without a doubt RJJ would have made very easy work of Joe if both men where in there prime! would he KO'ed Joe? its hard to say but I would not take it off the table. thats not saying Joe is worse than all the other fighters that hung in there with RJJ for 12 in his prime, it justsays how gifted RJJ really was.

Personally I respect Wlad and Joe but I understand why true fans of the sport hate on them sometimes because their backers tend to live in this delusional world where the current crop of heavyweights mean **** and that the SMW division meant something in Joe era. Both fighters dominated weak divisions but I might consider Joe great ( he might make my top 100 ATG list) wlad might make make my top 25 heavies. (I have trouble gauging his talent because the rest of the division is SSSSOOOO bad!)

so in the end it is extreme talk and backlash that tend create what seems to be outlandish claims
