What happened to the days of champions fighting an occasional tomato-can while preparing for a big show-down? We always have to wait so long between big showdowns. All that crazy talk of a "big" Mayorga fight with PBF got me thinking that Floyd actually should fight Mayorga on ABC or ESPN, while waiting for the big PPV fight against Cotto or whoever. PBF would gain a lot more casual fans by doing this, since they would be able to watch it for free and see him win impressively. Against Mayorga, it would be like watching PBF/Gatti II. After seeing the fight, I'm sure the PPV sales would go way up from all the extra fans he earned.
Are you kidding, if a fighter took a tune up fight against a can he'd get ripped apart on the forums!
Not if it didn't interfere with any big fights. For instance, we know PBF isn't gonna fight for maybe a year or so, so would people be angry if he fought Mayorga in February/March on ABC, and still fought Cotto late that year? I think people would only get upset if he fought Mayorga INSTEAD of Cotto, or if it delayed the big fight for another year or whatever..
All fights are a risk and no fighter wants to go through the motions with someone who might just get lucky and **** up their 20 mil payday.
Floyd Mayweather-Shambra Mitchell was considered a tune-up fight for Zab Judah. Oscar De La Hoya-Yori Boy Campas was a tune-up bout for the Shane Mosley rematch. Manny Pacquiao's fights with Oscar Larios and Hector Velasquez were tune-ups. You could probably call the Solis one a tune-up as well. Pacquiao has generally taken one "tune-up", or smaller fight against a perceived soft touch, between his big fights.
With a lot of the big name fighters being older - they're trying to capitalize on all they can get before they retire - so it should be a lot of big fight with in the next 2 to 3 years.
Also, with most champs only fighting 2-4 times a year, they don't really have time for "tune-ups" against cans. Back when champs fought more frequently, they had the opportunity to fit in a can or two.
yea like u can clearly see mayweather. Hatton , and evreybody else who gets ripped apart for either being to flashy or to fatty both to cum on here and read all of these forums, if they did they would read them then look at there bank and say ahh well least am doing something right!
I think a lot of young boxers today realize that they are part of a sport that can really just destroy their body (and their mind!!) if they fight just ONE fight too I really can't blame them, tune ups probably help your performance, but for a guy like a Floyd Mayweather Jr., it makes more sense to just get the big money fight going, rather than fight a couple of times in between big fights. Consider his hands. Floyd is at a very REAL risk of breaking his hands BADLY every time he puts on those light weight gloves and starts throwing punches with all of his hand speed, and with all of his power. Sure maybe he should have taken a tune up before going up to 150 lbs to fight Oscar, but to Floyd, all a tune up (or two) is is a chance to hurt his hands again. Also, I think if Floyd's able to get good enough sparring partner and if he's able to spar for as long as members of his camp claim he is, then he doesn't really NEED a tune up!
