I'd just moved here to Los Angeles a few months ago. I haven't seen a fight live since, so I decided to find any sports bar I could to catch the fight. I looked one up, and went to it, expecting to at least get a seat. It was a fancy bar/restaurant in the shopping district, and when I arrived, I was surprised that every bar seat was taken...mostly by Philipinos and Mexicans. The hostess informed me I could wait for a seat but she didn't know how long it would take. They'd shout and cheer and have a good time, waiting for their fighter to make their way to the ring. The fight was on HD, several screens throughout the bar. As I stood there, watching the introductions, I noticed something. Standing at the front entrance...there was a pack of people behind me, just like me, who didn't care about getting a drink or making conversations. They just wanted to see the fight. And as the fight started, and Pacquiao and Margarito wailed away...A crowd grew outside of the bar, watching through the windows. By the third round there were more people watching outside than inside! It was a familiar scene, when a giant PPV fight happens, but a great one. And do you know why this happens? Because at the end of the day, boxing is a fist fight. It inspires that excitement you got during recess when you heard that two kids were going to go at it behind the cafeteria. And that, ladies and gentlemen, will never go away. As violent as boxing is, there's something aesthetically beautiful about the motions two men go through during battle.
Well its been said that there is nothing bigger in sports than a highly anticipated Boxing match. I mean I was watching last night and Im a casual boxing fan but my chest was pumping. Ever since the Navarette/Bazooka Limon fight its always been like that.
Damn, I lived in LA and that towns divided, hated it frankly so how was it when fans are divided? Any heated exchanges?
Not at this bar. I mean I think the general consensus is that Mexicans kinda view Manny Pacquiao as one of their own, in a weird way. He fights like a Mexican speed-addict.
when the whole world stops just to watch 2 people inside the ring... you know it's something special.
The bars where I am only play Floyd and Pac fights because they can get the casual fans. Anything else is ignored. Once Pac and Floyd retire the boxing world better hope new mega stars take their place.
