 You do realize that this thread was started on 4/20/08? Or the day after Hopkins/Calzaghe? Yeah, i voted with my heart and voted for RJ. So sue me. That doesn't mean i thought RJ would win.

From a neutral viewpoint (I don't like Calzaghe or Jones) the fight had formed the following impression for me:

Calzaghe did great keeping up the tempo and coming in with an awkward stance that didn't let Roy lend his straight right at this angle.

However the flash knockdown and first 2 rounds being the only good rounds for Roy have surely made it clear that age has caught up to him and he blew his load short after. And I don't mean he gassed either, he did come in conditioned fairly well. But his muscles lost their explosive qualities very quickly, something that happens to older fighters, their muscles get stuffed with lactic acid faster and it retains there for longer, especially if constantly forced to hold your hands up to block with. Where as younger fighter regenerate throughout the fight and usually get a second surge of energy.

This of course all the more reason to complement Calzaghe as he didn't let Roy relax for a second. Forcing him to keep his hands up at all times. He plain and simply outworked him and would have likely outworked him at any point in Jones's life.

However outworked does not mean he would not get caught and badly hurt by younger Roy who would carry more power and speed into the latter rounds.

Roys hand speed after round 4/5 diminished greatly and by 6/7 those punches could have been avoided by a bad amateur.

Prime for Prime I would take Roy 2 out of 3 times to TKO/KO Calzaghe within 12 rounds. And Calzaghe outwork and win a UD 1 out of 3 times.

Roy looks like a wrinkled, dried up old smurf these days and should retire. His body is done with. Even though they are roughly the same age, Roy relies more on explosiveness and mongoose like agility. Joe is just a talanted boxer with lots in his arsenal and the stamina of a marathon runner and superhuman work rate. He also has good hand speed, head movement and defensive reaction. However a young mongoose would have caught him a lot more and caught him hard.

Well that's what the question asked:

Who wins ? (Not : Who do you HOPE wins ? )

And then it gave five choices:

    1 Jones on points

    2 Jones by KO/TKO

    3 Draw

    4 Calzaghe by KO/TKO

    5 Calzaghe on points

    You picked option 2.

    1) Roy fans did the same thing for years. And still do today.

    2) Roy fans do the same in regards to Hill, McCallum, and Tito in their primes.

Still, on reflection, maybe my earlier post was a bit strong.

I say that in light of when the poll was active.

April 20 till an hour before the fight.

If you made your call a while back, I apologize for the severity of my earlier post (#32).

    1) I guess that is true to some extent. But you can't deny his wins over Toney, Hopkins, and Ruiz. Those were incredibly impressive wins.

    2) That's why few consider those wins his signature wins, especially Tito. Come on.

Honestly same here... i also feel that his corner paniced from so much blood...Roy's NEVER been cut before and i think Merkerson just didnt know how to apply ****in vasoline to an open cut seeing as how he's never had to before...i was a bit upset about that cuz it seemed like that made Roy FURTHER gunshy...

but **** it...life goes on...i guess its up to Dawson now...

and for the RECORD! i will strongly admit that i had RJJ by KO...i knew he couldnt take it on points seeing that Calzaghe is a second half fighter

but i just thought would come into the fight a bit more...fired up...but i guess not :verysad
