Calzaghe has never publicly stated that he will retire. And even though he said that he will not fight Dawson, he also said that he will not fight Hopkins either, two of the most of the lucrative matches out there for Calzaghe (actually Taylor is also). For those who are wondering how Dawson is a lucrative fight, well HBO will give full support for a Dawson/Calzaghe match, therefore Gary Shaw and HBO can give Calzaghe the money he wants (which is probably around $5 million dollars are more). Think of this like the Pacquiao/Diaz match. Pacquaio getting the bigger share ($3 million dollars) and Diaz only getting around $900,000, but in this scenario Dawson has a very good chance at beating Calzaghe. Also Dawson is willing to fight Calzaghe in the Millennium Stadium which will be sold out no doubt, which means more $$$ for Calzaghe. Dawson has yet to announce who he wants to fight next, that's because he's waiting for Calzaghe to announce something. If Calzaghe doesn't want to fight Dawson, then Dawson will fight Glen Johnson or Tavoris Cloud
I don't know too much about this, but I know Calzaghe gets better revenue fighting in Wales since Millennium Stadium gets sold out easily. Dawson has stated that he would like to fight Calzaghe in the U.K. It's also cheaper for HBO too therefore Calzaghe gets more money. Calzaghe never said that he will retire, he said he wants to THINK about what he wants to do next. There was an article about Enzo saying that Joe wants to fight one more time in Wales.
it figures now that there are no more old veteran fighters to beat other then glen johnson... but calzaghe knows better then to go that road... that calzaghe would wanna do some serious thinking about what his next fight will be.... no more one dimensional sluggers, overrated european fighters, old beat up legends, and legends that can still put up a fight but dont have any of their old stamina left.... who can we fight now to look good but no risks... whoo....... winky wright.. no they wouldnt buy that.... glen johnson.. no too tough... hmm... maybe jermaine taylor.. but that loss to pavlik..hmm.. dawson... no too much risk.... lets just retire
If Calzaghe fights Dawson, i will give him much credit. If he beats Dawson decisively, i will be forever on his jock.
Its Hopkins hes Fighting .. In Cardiffs Millennium Stadium ,, Image from Joes after fight party ! This content is protected
1) Dawson 2) Johnson 3) Taylor (another good win would bump him up to #2) That's how I'd rank the opponents in terms of my preference for who Calzaghe should fight if he doesn't retire.
He should fight Dawson or retire. There's no one else left. If he isn't interested, he should retire and enjoy the rest of his life knowing he is an ATG.
Dawson has a rematch clause to fight Tarver next. He may have to get him out of the way (again) before fighting Calzaghe. If he won't fight Calzaghe next, he will face Tarver...for sure.
What if he fights him in England as his retirement fight, and gets a controversial decision win? :think
Hopkins is gone. He's been beaten already in his own country with US officials. And it wasn't that close. Dawson is a 50-50 fight, one that could seriously jeopardize his zero. It would be a 37 yearold against a 27 year old. Joe should probably retire. If he wants to roll the dice, at least $10m needs to be on HIS side of the table. (Neither Johnson nor Taylor present sufficient challenge.)
Michalczewski? That would have been a cracking fight in the late 90's. Nowadays though he is 3 years retired.
Tarver hasn't activated it yet, probably because he knows he's going to lose again. Also there is Tavoris Cloud the IBF mandatory. From what I heard from Dawson's camp, Dawson wants to rematch Johnson again sometime next year.
