Why can GSP so easily takedown these great wrestlers?

I mean GSP doesn't even seem to lunge into his opponents legs
with the force or tenacity of a Hughes and certainly not Koschek
yet he easily sweeps them off their feet. They try it with him and
he easily backs out of reach. These guys have decades of amatuer
wrestling and just get flopped on their backsides by a guy who
started training in wrestling a few years ago. Is it just a speed thing?
Balance? Any thoughts would be appreciated. I'm pretty new to the
    sport. Thanks.

    Because he's a great wrestler.

Pretty obvious when you think about it.

I think it's a combination of things..he's strong, fast, super athletic and he has been training with top canadian wrestlers for a few years now.Did you see his legs?...those things are big slabs of muscle and are explosive. He took Hughes down with ease....I have never seen Matt Hughes been put down like that before and keep him down, he did the same thing with KOS....GSP said he would out wrestle KOS and KOS laughed.....and what happened...KOS got beat at his own game. Hughes even got submitted after getting owned at his only skill. But GSP is a phenom

Yeah, he must be a phenom because it's rare for any athlete to achieve
that level of skill in any sport when they start training for it in adulthood. It's tantamount to a great quarterback taking up tennis
as a 20year old and in a few years challenging and DEFEATING
    Roger Federer in a grand slam tournament. Or a better analogy;
Sugar Ray Leonard taking up wrestling at the same age that GSP
did and submitting and defeating two of the most decorated amatuer
wrestlers in the U.S. I know gold medalist Kurt Angle said recently
he can't believe how GSP outwrestled Koshchek. So I guess Canada
finally has a true superstar; a phenom as you say. Cool.

Yeah, GSP is a freak, its incredible to think about how fast he's developed.

Even more incredible to think about how far he can go in MMA.
Once he destroys Serra who has any real chance against him
at welter? Diego who lost recently or any of those other guys.
No, I think he's going to have to move up to 185lbs. to be truly
tested. That tall Brazilian dude that slaughtered Franklin comes
to mind as a great future opponent.

The only guy I can think of that would be a suitable fight would be Jon Fitch and I guess maybe Sanchez.

After that, GSP has already cleaned the division out. He could move up to 185 but thats his walk around weight, he would be dwarfed by the 185lb'ers who cut down from 200lb+

    I wouldn't go that far.

GSP would be the best wrestler that Silva ever fought. Who knows, maybe he could actually put silva down and hold him there.

Silva is probably the better striker, but GSP is no slouch at the standup game either. Both Silva and GSP are really really special fighters, and the only reason I would give the advantage to Silva is because Silva is naturally bigger.

GSP has been wrestling for YEARS, and has to be considered a wrestler himself. Hell, he trains with the Olympic team every day. His wrestling has been the strongest part of his game for a while now. So... you put that in the mix with being great on his feet, and the other wrestlers that he is fighting against have to be too concerned with Pierre's striking ability to fully protect from a shot. If you watch, in the fight against Hughes especially, Matt didn't even bother defending those takedowns. I think that Matt WANTED to go to the ground, because he had no chance in hell on their feet. At least Matt had a chance to work off of his back, and catch GSP in a sub.

However, if you put Koschek vs St. Pierre in a flat out wresting match, Kos would eat him up. Trust me. It is just that GSP is so well rounded, and when he fights someone like KOS or Hughes, he doesn't have to worry about their striking, they have to worry about his. So, GSP can always be ready to stuff a shot, or take a shot. His opponents have to be worried about all of GSP's weapons on his feet, and before they know it, he is in on their legs, and they are out of position.

    He's a beast.

How can I possibly just "trust you" on that?

First of all, GSP is obviously naturally bigger than KOS and, frankly, if he is taking down guys like Rashad Evans at will in practice there is no reason to simply "know" that KOS would beat him in a wrestling match.

GSP is so good he wanted to go to the olympics for Gods sakes, and he trains with the Canadian olympic team so he probably knows if he is good enough or not to be competitive at that level. NCAA National champ or not, KOS has never competed at the olympic level. Not that GSP has either... but we just cant know.

It's sort of how the best pro boxers in history might have been Cuban, but they just could never turn pro. Just because GSP has never had serious wrestling only competition, doesn't mean that his training for it hasn't been serious enough to make him one of the absolute best in the world.

If Kos and GSP were to have a straight up wrestling match my money would be on GSP. Without a doubt.

    That brings up another question.

What kind of wrestling are we talking about here? Freestyle? Greco-Roman? Submission Grappling?

I mean, I'd give KOS the biggest chance in Freestyle wrestling, but GSPs Jujitsu is too good for KOS to win a grappling match. I imagine GSP is too strong and big for KOS to win if it were Greco...

GSP is extremely talented and horribly skilled. The man is a freak when he is on form.

Against Serra, he got caught, nearly survived but got overwhelmed.

MMA is like that. GSP can be amazing but neglect his boxing defence just a little, get caught with a few right hands and its good night. A game that is designed to be so versatile can sometimes be decided with such a basic approach - right hands.

GSP got caugh v Hughes too with the armbar but like a champ he came back twice to show he was the better fighter. Now he needs to clean up the Serra mess and he'll be back on track.

You can't compare Rashad Evans to Kos. Rashad Evans was 48-34 in wrestling during his college years. That isn't exactly the mark of a "great" wrestler. Koscheck placed in the top 4 of Nationals every year, and went UNDEFEATED 42-0 and won the NCAA title as a Junior. I don't think that anyone who has never wrestled can really understand how hard that is to do.

Kos is a freak on the mat... and I understand that St. Pierre by this time is a very good wrestler himself. However, GSP doesn't have a chance to beat Kos in a straight up wrestling match, I'm sorry. This is coming from a GSP fan. I know too much about wrestling to let being a GSP fan get in the way of my judgement in that regard.
