Pavlik was a much bigger draw than Martinez is even now and I have no idea why you'd imply otherwise. I wouldn't deny that Cotto is a bigger fighter than Martinez, but then again, co-promotion doesn't imply a 50/50 split, as you seem to be wrongly suggesting. Also, I'm going to need to see a source on DiBella saying it was Martinez who declined. Everything I read about this indicated that DiBella was offended at Arum's offer. See here: http://www.badlefthook.com/2010/12/8/1864775/sergio-martinez-miguel-cotto-off-the-table-says-dibella

The fact of the matter is that Arum had already had one of his stars get lit up by Martinez and he's still not particularly crazy about letting that hapen again.
Right but beating Ward, Bute, or Froch won't either. Pacquiao and Mayweather are locked at the top until one of them loses.

I'm discounting his ability to make 168 at his age and his desire to do so to get a fight with an obscure Argentinean.

He was offended but did go back with it to Martinez and his advisor and they agreed with him:

DiBella says the same thing in the next article, which also has Arum's sxplanation that it was Cotto who insisted on the straight number deal:

Being that his 36 and a fighter who relies on his speed and athleticism, he doesnt have alot of time to waste he prob has a few good fights in him left. His looking for a payday while his value is still high. hope he gets his payday, guys spent his whole career in obscurity its only been these last 3 ears his gotten major attention.

    This thread was made to:

Divert attention away from the fight that Mayweather SHOULD take.... Martinez!

    ____________

Trying to involve Martinez with bigger fighters... is supposed to make us think that Mayweather is too small... rubbish and hopefully not many will fall for it.

I will bite. Sergio is two divisions bigger than Mayweather and Manny and brings nothing to the table. Why cant Sergio go up one division? Nobpdy ever answers this. Mayweather has ZERO reason to go up and fight him. But Sergio has plenty to go up on division.

I disagree that Martinez has plenty of reason to go up. There's a bunch of obscure Europeans at middleweight, but then again I doubt Martinez could make much more going up than he does now. Bute's the only real money at 168, and if recent comments are to be believed, Interbox isn't very keen on giving opponents' decent cuts of the purse anyway. I mean Martinez apparently made close to $2 million against Dzinziruk of all people; is it really worth going to a weight he's not comfortable at for what in all likelihood only marginally more money? Beyond this, while I highly doubt that Pacquiao or Mayweather will ever have anything to do with him, the paydays they offer are so much bigger than anyone else in boxing than it may be perfectly rational to bide his time for at least a while longer, rather than moving up now and forever ruling out a fight with either of them.

I don't think Bute can make 164 the fight will have to be at super middle

Martinez agreeing with DiBella's rejection after the fight was already dead is not the way you initially described things.
Martinez had just been brought in as an opponent with the short end of the money for two straight fights against name opponents, yet neither of those wins apparently did enough for his stock in Arum's world. Also, I'm calling bull**** on Cotto being the one who insisted on no co-promotion; I've never believed Arum about that since these events transpired. Finally, the Margarito fight will obviously be bigger than Martinez-Cotto, but Mayorga-Cotto (the one that actually replaced Martinez-Cotto) or Arum's desired Vanes-Cotto match definitely didn't do anything near what a Martinez fight would have.
