I agree. We have fighters contesting, say super bantam (122), and one of them might weigh 128 and the other 141 pounds. Even the small guy is "two divisions" above his advertised division, and the other guy is a de/rehydration freak about four or five divisions above his weigh in. I suspect this happens a lot.
I meant historically, although it's pretty spicy at the minute. Not as much noise since Tanaka moved up, though. Here's my all-time list: #25. Roman Gonzalez #24. Dado Marino #23. Tancy Lee #22. Efren Torres #21. Jackie Paterson #20. Rinty Monaghan #19. Pong Wonjongham #18. Santos Laciar #17. Fidel LaBarba #16. Horacio Accavallo #15. Chartchai Chionoi #14. Willie Davis #13. Pone Kingpetch #12. Betulio Gonzalez #11. Hiroyuki Ebihara #10. Peter Kane #09. Masao Õba #08. Pancho Villa #07. Newsboy Brown #06. Benny Lynch #05. Pascual Perez #04. Frankie Genaro #03. Midget Wolgast #02. Miguel Canto #01. Jimmy Wilde
I don't know who any of those people are except #25. I think you have to be a die-hard boxing fan to know any more that Anything below lightweight to me is kind of like midget wrestling used to be. First few minutes "hey this is fun". After that, you know they aren't big enough to really hurt each other so you kind of lose interest.
You don't have to be a hardcore fan to have heard of Jimmy Wilde, and I don't know how any purist couldn't appreciate Miguel Canto.
The problem will go in opposite direction. More weight classes (bridgerweight). More belts (IBO). Whats next ? 25 categories, and 9 champion per category ???
