Its simple. In todays era of boxing. Belts don't mean anything, so we just want to see the best match-ups in the sport.

For example, Ward vs Dawson, should have been fought at a catchweight. We all wanted to see that fight, but fighting at light heavy and it gives dawson the advantages, fighting at super mid, and ward has all the advantages.

The fairest thing to do is agree to a catch weight before hand that makes the fight as even as can be.

They've been used throughout the history of boxing to make many great fights.

Noone ever had an issue, until a certain group of fans wanted to try and discredit another high profile fighters record, and that's where things have spiraled.

But for the hundred years of boxing history prior to that, noone gave a ****.

catch weights are terrible for boxing. They are in place to let a popular fighter get away with not having to fight at a certain weight for his title. Sugar Ray Leonard started this with Donny Lalonde. Can you imagine fighting the least talented light heavyweight at 168 pounds for both the 168 and 175 pound titles, neither guys is ranked at that division to fight for? Leonard was not ranked at 168 or 175, and Lalonde was not ranked at 168 either.

Whilst i agree, i don't like it when titles are on the line and its also for a catchweight.

    But titles are bil**** anyway.

I'm saying Boxing is about making the best fights, and catchweights do this.

And its not always for the most popular fighter.

For example Marquez rose up in weight to fight both Floyd and Manny. He wasn't the big name fighter, but they put a catchweight in to make it an even fight, as he was the one coming up in weight.

Marquez was the B-side for both these fights, yet he got a catchweight to benefit him

no title at stake I don't think it matters much then, but with a title they shouldn't have one. Leonard started all this stuff. He fought Lalonde at 168 and when he fought Hearns in 1989 they had a weigh agreement of 164. He thought Tommy would be too weakened to make 164. Tommy came in at 162 and Ray at 160.

If catchweights are FAIR then fair enough

But most often theyre anything but fair - by a team trying to render the other guy useless *cough pacquiao*

i disagree. This was started as away for certain groups of fans to diminish his legacy. *Cough *****s

Look at the history of it. He fought Cotto at a catchweight. And no one had any issues with it at the time. NOONE. Pac was considered a small 140 fighter. And Cotto performed well and noone said it after. This all came out a couple of years later.

Then Margo. A career 147 fighter, and they fought around 150. Those extra lbs only helped Margo, and he was anything but drained that fight.

I agree the titles are bull, but nothing wrong with the wins and the weights they were fought at.

Noone, says Marquez was trying to render Pac and Floyd useless for asking for catchweights.

Noone says Cotto was for asking one against Margo.

They only use it on Pac cos he's highprofile and they try to diminish him.

if it is for the title there is something wrong with it. If a title is at the 154 pound limit for example, the fighter should weigh in on the day of the fight at that weight. Nowadays they change the weights with these catchweights, and also the weigh in is a day before the fight.

Actually a few threads were made criticizing this, why would a 154 lb fighter ask another 154 lb fighter to go to a catchweight? It seemed bizarre
